Spurs' situation with Splitter reminds of Scola

The most efficient Western Conference big man in March has been Houston's
Luis Scola. In nine games, he has made 58.9 percent of his shots and averaged
23.6 points and 13.6 rebounds, keeping alive the Rockets' fading playoff
hopes.
火箭隊的Luis Scola是三月份西區績效最佳的長人。他在9場出賽中58.9%的FG，場

Scola is better known in these parts as the best draft pick the Spurs never
signed. Every time he has a big game — a 44-point explosion against the
Nets, or 30 points and 14 rebounds vs. the Spurs — he picks at the scab of a
wound that won't heal.
比起這些，Scola更為人所知的是馬刺的莫再提。每一次當他比賽爆氣 — 44分打爆

Now the Spurs face the prospect of another summer like 2007, when they traded
Scola's draft rights to the Rockets, along with total bust big man Jackie
Butler, for Vasillis Spanoulis and a 2009 second-round pick.
現在馬刺面對的是2007年夏天的另個翻版，當時用Scola的選秀簽權交易給火箭，外
加花瓶長人Jackie Butler，換得Vasillis Spanoulis與2009年二輪簽。
Tiago Splitter, the Spurs' first-round pick in 2007, is widely acknowledged
as the best big man in Europe. This summer, he has an opt-out clause in his
contract with Tau Ceramica, the Spanish League team for which he has played
since he was a teenager.
馬刺2007年用首輪簽選的Tiago Splitter，是公認的歐洲最佳長人。今年夏天，他與
自少年時期效力至今的西班牙聯盟Tau Ceramica隊所簽的合約中有脫逃條款。
This was thought to be good timing for the Spurs. The league's collective
bargaining agreement contains language that allows teams to treat
first-rounders who play three years for non-NBA teams, post-draft, as if they
are free agents. It will have been three years this June since the Spurs made
Splitter the 28th selection of the 2007 draft, so he falls into that category.
這點被認為是馬刺的好時機。聯盟的集體談判協議中，有著球隊第一輪選中、於選秀
後在非NBA球隊中效力達三年的球員，類同自由球員的協議。自馬刺於2007年以28順位簽

Up to now, the Spurs had been limited to offering the 6-foot-11 center
$970,000 for the first year of his rookie scale contract. Now, they can offer
a lot more, but they are still bound by collective bargaining agreement
rules. Just as they have no cap room to offer big money to free agents from
other teams this summer, they are limited to cap exceptions as they try to
lure Splitter.

Trouble is, even that amount likely won't pry him out of Spain. That's
because the prospect of an NBA lockout that could wipe out the entire 2011-12
season is enough to make any player making mega-Euros think twice about
bolting for the NBA. Splitter's deal reportedly is worth more than $5 million.

a waste?

They're still the only NBA team that can negotiate with his people —
Splitter switched agents within the last few months, dropping Herb Rudoy for
Arn Tellem — and there are a lot of teams with significant cap space this
summer who could make him a better offer if they had his rights.
他們仍是唯一一支能與Splitter談判協議的NBA球隊，Splitter在最近幾月換了經紀

“It's more likely they'll try to do a sign-and-trade that includes his

With the Raptors tanking lately, threatening to drop out of the Eastern
playoff picture, their chances of retaining Bosh get slimmer and slimmer, and
a sign-and-trade more and more likely.
隨著暴龍近來重挫，搶進東區季後賽席次岌岌可危，留住Bosh的機會渺茫，而先簽
後換的機會越來越有可能發生。
If the Spurs can leverage another team's desperation to alleviate some of
their own, they should do it.
假使馬刺能藉機使力，以減輕失去Splitter的損失，just do it!
Don't get overly excited about the prospect, though. The suggestion from afar
was that the Spurs might be able to use Splitter's rights as a third-party
sweetener in a Bosh sign-and-trade, getting another player or future draft
pick in the package, not Bosh.
儘管如此，別抱持著過高的期待。這小小提議是馬刺或許能利用Splitter的談約權，
於Bosh先簽後換的三方交易中漁翁得利，得到某個球員或是未來選秀簽打包，而非得到
龍王Bosh。
Then they will have to hope Splitter doesn't produce as consistently as Scola.

目前Ratliff加盟山貓對他們進季後賽起了很重要的作用，為此Larry Brown表示:
"Theo always has done what he does best -- defend, rebound, be incredibly
unselfish,'' Brown said. "He's doing things now that we really need. Thank
God (San Antonio GM and coach) Gregg Popovich is a good friend of mine. We
needed him (Ratliff).''
