Scales tip in favor of Manu, Spurs

If Spurs general manager R.C. Buford and his assistants are worried that if
Manu Ginobili signs a contract extension he will feel the strong pull of his
Argentine homeland when the FIBA World Championships begin in Turkey this
summer, well, he already does.

“The date is approaching and makes me really want to play,” Ginobili said

We have so many stories and anecdotes, it's hard to see them go without me.”

The Spurs don't need to fear that their heart-and-soul shooting guard doesn't
understand that the rigors of eight years of playing deep into the playoffs,
combined with many summers spent on his national team, have taken a toll on a
32-year-old body.

He knows committing to Turkey may not be the right move.

I've got to qualify, too. So if I end up playing in 2010, then that is '10,

So do the Spurs, and the only smart thing now is an entreaty to Ginobili that
locks up his future before a team with money to burn makes him an offer he
can't refuse on July 1, when he can become a free agent.

  馬刺也是同樣想法，而眼下第一要務就是趕在七月1日前把Ginobili留在馬刺。

Even with Tony Parker sidelined and Tim Duncan experiencing a brief malaise,
the Spurs have played their best basketball recently because Ginobili has
been one of the NBA's most dominant players in March.

If the Spurs have success in the playoffs, it will be because Ginobili still

Ten weeks ago, though, Buford answered a question about possible plans to
talk with Ginobili's agent before July 1 with a question of his own.

“Can you tell me what we have in Manu right now?” he asked then.

and playmaking ability of an elite player.

The NBA's collective bargaining agreement with the players' union expressly
forbids teams from prohibiting — or even discouraging — players from
participating on national teams, but the Spurs remember the injury in Beijing
that torpedoed Ginobili's 2008-09 season.

  NBA勞資協議明確禁止球隊禁止球員參加國家隊比賽，哪怕是僅僅勸阻也不行。但是對
於北京之行所留下的傷病是怎樣報銷掉08-09賽季的Ginobili的，馬刺依然歷歷在目、記
憶猶新。

Now, though, there is another reason to believe he may forego the tournament
in Turkey. He can hardly wait to become a father, and twins are due for him
and wife, Many, in July.

  現在，另一個可能會使他打消參加世錦賽的原因是: 他和他妻子Many的雙胞胎將在7月
出生，而Manu已經迫不及待的想當爹了。

“Oh, yes, it would be very difficult to leave them (in August and September),
” he said, “especially since they are going to be 2 months old, and they
are my first ones. It's something I have been waiting for a long time, trying
to bring kids to the world for a couple of years.

“Now that I have them, I'm going to leave? That is kind of hard to do, too.
There are a lot of things you've got to put on the scale, and we'll see.”

That sounds like a player who has decided this summer's scales tip towards
the nursery, not the basketball court.

  這點看來，他今夏的去處是育嬰室，而非球場上了。

Meanwhile, the negotiating scales continue to tip in Ginobili's favor as his
free agency approaches and the Spurs' exclusive window to talk with him comes
down to its final days.

  在此其間，談判天秤上的砝瑪持續向著Ginobili傾斜，而隨著他成為自由球員的日子
漸進，馬刺壟斷的談判優勢也逐漸與日俱減。
