LOS ANGELES — Born and raised in L.A., Spurs forward Richard Jefferson
considers himself a California boy at heart. Still, he has no desire to
return to Los Angeles later this month for the start of the playoffs.
His preferred first-round opponent: anybody but the Lakers.

“That doesn't mean the 2 or 3 seed are any easier,” Jefferson said. “It's
just when you have the defending NBA champs there, you'd rather go a
different path.”

For the Spurs, that means staying out of eighth place.

The Lakers are the West's presumptive No. 1 seed for the third season in a
row. The Spurs began Saturday in seventh, just half a game ahead of
eighth-place Portland, in line to face second-seeded Dallas in the first
round.

A victory today at the Staples Center would not by itself allow the Spurs to
avoid a Lakers rematch later this month, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.

With the postseason picture still fluid, other possible permutations could
result in the Spurs opening with Phoenix, Utah or even Denver. Regardless of
foe, it appears likely the Spurs will open the playoffs on the road for the
first time since 1997-98.

“Of course, we want to move up,” guard Manu Ginobili said. “It's going to
be a tough opponent no matter what, but you always want the highest seed
possible.”

Ginobili received the MVP treatment from the home crowd as he went to the
foul line late in the fourth quarter against Orlando.

“I feel honored at how our fans support me,” Ginobili said. “But it's hard
to go shoot free throws when they are chanting that.”

playing rotation with his ability to stretch defenses.
