Ginobili's next step: decide on Worlds

Relieved to know where he will be playing for the next three NBA seasons,
Spurs guard Manu Ginobili is pondering his next big basketball decision:
whether to play for Argentina in the 2010 FIBA World Championships this
summer.
After the Spurs' officially announced Friday morning they had signed Ginobili
to a contract extension that takes him out of this summer's free agent
market, Ginobili said he soon would make an announcement of his own.
“I'm guessing in the next few days I'll give my final answer,” he said.
Ginobili is the unquestioned leader of Team Argentina, the 2004 Olympic gold
medal winner, silver medalists in the 2006 World Championships, and bronze
winners in the 2008 Olympic competition.
Under pressure in his homeland to play this summer in Turkey, Ginobili is
torn between his loyalty to his national team and what is best for a Spurs
organization that just committed to pay him $38.9 million over three more
seasons.
He also must think of what is best for his family, about to grow by two. His
wife, Many, is to deliver twin boys in May.
The 32-year-old guard is committed, in his own mind, to playing for Argentina
in the 2012 Olympics, a fact that also gives him pause about this summer's
competition, given the wear and tear each summer of play exacts.
“I've still got a few things to decide,” he said. “I'm going to have to
make a decision sooner. Before, I didn't know where I was going to play. Now,
I know. There's no more reason to wait until July to decide.”
The Spurs are anxious about the decision. Prohibited by NBA rule from
preventing players from competing for their national teams, the Spurs instead
rely on Ginobili's judgment.
“I think we're obviously concerned and hope that he's respectful of his own
health,” Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said.
The ankle injury Ginobili suffered in the 2008 Beijing Games affected his
play last season and led to the suspension of contract extension talks that
had begun before those Olympics.
Ginobili acknowledged Friday that the Spurs' doubts about his ability to
recover fully from his injuries and become the player who had been an
All-Star in 2007-08 had caused some hard feelings.
“I was a little upset,” he said. “Then understanding and then, I just let
it go.
“I went through all the moods possible, and now it's gone. We are good
friends again. We love each other again. I'm happy it's happening.”
Convinced, little more than a week ago, that he would become a free agent and
test the market beginning July 1, the team's offensive catalyst said the
Spurs proved their sincere intent to keep him in a series of meetings with
upper management.
“I really didn't have a problem of waiting until July,” he said. “I knew
San Antonio was going to be my first option, regardless, but when I saw them
trying really hard to get me back, and I had a couple meetings with them and
I heard what they had to say, I was way more convinced to stay than before.”
It didn't hurt that the Spurs offered Ginobili the maximum amount they could
for a three-year deal.
“(That felt) very good,” he said. “Besides the fact they wanted me back, I
wanted to see a commitment and effort to keep me.”

相愛，他很樂見於此。無論如何馬刺是他的首選，雙方會談後，他比先前更加確信會
留在聖安東尼奧。
Duncan開玩笑說如果馬刺不續簽Manu的話，他就不幫他老婆買明年馬刺的季票了。
