In the middle of the greatest quarter by a left-handed Slovenian in the history
of the building (sorry, Beno Udrih), Alvin Gentry turned to the scorer’s table
with eyes wide.
“Jesus Christ,” Gentry said, as if even He could have had such a fourth
quarter.
But the stunning part of the night wasn’t Goran Dragic, a player the Spurs
once drafted. It was something else.
The Suns could have won if Dragic had been Udrih.
The Spurs took an 18-point lead, with a home crowd expecting the best from a
four-title franchise. Then the Suns dissected the Spurs with different
personnel and the same plan.

Against these Suns, in the 2005 conference finals, Gregg Popovich described the
versatility of his players by calling them “chameleons.”
Now the Suns are the lizard kings and the Spurs the insects, and the roles
officially switched midway in the second quarter. Then, Tony Parker drove with
a 16-point lead, took an Amare Stoudemire bump and landed on his shoulder.
He stayed on the ground coughing, and when he got up he was never the same. He
missed four consecutive free throws, suggesting something was the matter, and
he confirmed that afterward.

A sports hernia slowed him against the Spurs in the 2008 playoffs. Had he
played this way then, then maybe the Suns would have won that series and Mike
D’Antoni would still work in Phoenix.
Instead, he symbolized Gentry’s emphasis on defense. Hill scored 18 points
efficiently, but it was his work on Manu Ginobili that continued to be a factor
. Even as Ginobili heated up Friday, giving the Spurs their one hope, Hill
still made it hard on him.

But as Hill remained the constant, along with Channing Frye setting up at

opener, the Suns rebounders were the spark in Game 2 and Friday night had
another cast.
Matt Bonner outscored Stoudemire, for example. Yet there were the Suns,
sticking 39 points on the Spurs in the fourth quarter.
“They picked us apart,” Ginobili said. “Drive and kick, pick and roll, the
whole package. It was embarrassing.”
Ginobili has never been through this with the Spurs, but it has happened before
in the Popovich era. They were down 0-3 in a series in 2001 to the Lakers after
losing by 39 points in Game 3.

Yet. Assuming Phoenix and the Lakers meet next, the Lakers should beware. The
Suns are playing defense, and they are getting something out of 10 players, and
they are acting the way the Spurs once did.
When they were the chameleons.
