PORTLAND, Ore. — If past performance counts, DeJuan Blair figures he is a
lock to be named to the sophomore team for the All-Star Weekend Rookie
Challenge game at Staples Center on Feb. 19.

Blair, the Spurs starting center, and valuable rookie Gary Neal, averaging
8.7 points for the team with the NBA’s best record, are awaiting today’s
announcement on the participants for this season’s game.

Last year, Blair recorded the first 20-20 game since the rookie-sophomore
game was added to the All-Star Saturday schedule in 2000, scoring 22 points
and grabbing 23 rebounds. He broke the rebounding record established by Elton
Brand in the inaugural game in 2000.

The 26-year-old Neal, a veteran of three seasons overseas before joining the
Spurs, ranks sixth in scoring among this season’s rookies, and Spurs captain

games with bone marrow edema in his right knee, coach Gregg Popovich has to
find another source of interior energy off the bench.
Enter Antonio McDyess, at age 36 the team’s oldest player.
“Antonio has done a good job of being consistent for us,” Popovich said. “
He’s more of a defender-rebounder than Matt is. We’ve kind of traded that
element with that exchange. He’s also made shots. He’s a consummate pro. He
’s filled in nicely.”

McDyess has played an average of 20.7 minutes in the seven games Bonner has

player. But I want to be certain I don’t overplay him because we need him
come playoff time. His toughness and knowledge are irreplaceable.”
