With stars sitting out, Spurs’ skid at four losses

Hours before he arrived at the AT&T Center for Monday’s game against the
Trail Blazers, a 100-92 loss that extended his team’s losing streak to four
games, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich already had gotten the news from his
medical staff.

he suffered in Sunday’s loss at Memphis to play.

By the time he got to the arena, the injury report had gone from bad to
worse. Starting guard Tony Parker had a left kneecap that was too sore to
allow him to suit up, and Antonio McDyess’ back ached like a 36-year-old who
had been knocked hard to the floor by 260-pound Zach Randolph the night
before.

Portland coach Nate McMillan was convinced Popovich was playing mind games
with his team.

a couple of his guys, and you throw in some scrappy players like they have.

Though Popovich would have preferred to have all his starters available in an

According to Danny Green, one of the newest Spurs, what Popovich told his
players before the game was to keep things simple and have some fun.

It slipped because the Spurs made only 6 of 25 shots from 3-point range.
Worse, they missed 10 of their 20 free-throw attempts.

Still, for a while in the fourth quarter, it appeared Popovich’s makeshift
lineup might produce a remarkable result. Using backup point guard Chris
Quinn for the first time since March 2, and recent free-agent signee Green
for just the third time this season, the Spurs led by eight, 80-72, after
Neal nailed a 3-pointer with 9:20 remaining in the fourth period.
