T.J. not expected to play Friday night against Clippers
T.J. Ford, who sustained a stinger late in the second quarter of the Spurs’
victory over New York Wednesday night, is not expected to play in their game
against the Los Angeles Clippers Friday night.
Ford, who has a history of spinal-cord injuries dating to his time at Texas,
was with his team at their practice Thursday, although he did not take part
in the light drills.
The former Naismith Award winner was injured when he was pushed out of the
lane battling for a rebound with New York guard Baron Davis. When Ford was
falling to the floor, he appeared to be inadvertently kicked in the head by
Tiago Splitter.
After being diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal,
Ford was injured in a fall just 55 games into his rookie season in 2003-04
with Milwaukee. He then missed the entire 2004-05 season after surgery before
returning to the Bucks’ roster.
His teammates said they were relieved to see Ford return for Thursday’s film
session.
“I talked to him,” Spurs guard Gary Neal said. “He said he’s a little
better but he’s still sore. He took a nice little hit trying to box out
Baron Davis. That kind of did it. But I think T.J. will be all right.”
Neal said he was concerned when he saw Ford on the ground for about three
minutes before he was taken to the Spurs’ locker room.
“When he went down and once the play stopped and we realized what happened,
of course I said a little prayer to make sure nothing was really wrong,”
Neal said. “I saw his head moving and his feet moving, so that’s kind of a
good sign.”
The Spurs announced during the game that there was no neurological damage
resulting from Ford’s injury. He returned to the bench for much of the
second half.
“I think he just had a stinger, or something like that, but when you see
somebody get hit and kind of lay down and not really move as freely as they
normally would it’s definitely scary.”
If Ford can’t play, it will thrust Neal back into the backup point guard
role behind Tony Parker.
Ford didn’t participate in any of the shooting drills at practice, but was
present for the film session.
“Today was a light day,” Neal said. “Coach Pop just wanted to get
everybody in, and get flexibility and a little bit of stiffness out from
yesterday’s game.”
Spurs recall Cory Joseph from Austin
The Spurs have recalled rookie guard Cory Joseph from Austin Toros in the NBA
’s Development League.
The move is coming in the wake of T.J. Ford’s stinger injury he sustained in
Wednesday’s victory over New York.
Ford, has a history of spinal-cord injuries dating to his time at Texas, was
with his team at their practice Thursday, although he did not take part in
the light drills. He is not expected to play in tonight’s game against the
Los Angeles Clippers.
Joseph, a 6-3 guard, was assigned to Austin on March 3. He appeared in two
games for the Toros, averaging 10.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in
27.0 minutes. For the season, Joseph has appeared in six games for Austin,
averaging 10.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.67 steals in 30.3
minutes.
Before he was sent to Austin, Joseph played in 25 games this season,
averaging 1.8 points and 1.2 assists in 8.0 minutes.
