9 The Sage

These days the tirades are less frequent, but Popovich leans on his star in
other ways. When the Spurs call a timeout and you see the San Antonio coaches
huddle a few feet from the bench, it's not to hash out strategy. Rather, Pop
is giving Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker time with the team. "You'll

O.K., it's a toss-up as to how this will make you feel about Duncan: Did he
once invite a bunch of teammates to a paintball course even though most had
never played paintball? Perhaps. Did Duncan then stack his team with ringers
and bring his own high-powered paintball gun? Maybe. Did he give certain
players such as Danny Ferry guns that, according to Ferry, "were bent and
shot six feet to the left every time"? There's a chance. And did Duncan then
take great delight in hunting down his teammates, chasing the pale, balding,
shorts-wearing Ferry until he was in close range, at which point Duncan
unleashed a hail of water-soluble hellfire upon the man? It's possible.

Just kidding, as this might count in his favor. In fact, Duncan hates Kevin
Garnett. Hates him the way liberals hate Sean Hannity. This information comes
from very reliable sources, who talk about how KG has made a career of trying
to punk Duncan, baiting him and slapping him and whispering really weird
smack into his ear. They talk about how funny this is, because the worst
thing you can do as an opponent is piss off Duncan. Then, as Malik Rose says,
"he f------ destroys you." Duncan's lifetime numbers versus Garnett's teams,
by the way: 19.4 points per game, 11.6 boards and a 44--17 record, including
the postseason.

Duncan is diplomatic about the topic. Asked if perhaps all those years
battling Garnett have softened his feelings for the man, led to a Magic-Larry
type of kinship, Duncan leans back on the couch in his hotel room and grins.
There is a pause. A longer pause. Finally he says, "Define kinship."

關於傳說中的母親節事件，
網路上目前沒有什麼直接證據，都是一些轉述的東西。

傳聞是發生在1999年季後賽的Game 1，

There was, though, the more famous incident in Game 1 of that 1999 series in
which Garnett got into Tim's face and started doing his talking with his head
turning as he talked. Tim's response was just to smile and say nothing, as
Mario Elie said after that game:

"Tim is a cool cat. Nothing fazes him," teammate Mario Elie said. "Kevin
Garnett got in his face and Tim just smiled and walked away. Tim doesn't
brag. He just goes out and does his job."

For the record, that game (Game 1) was on May 9, 1999, which just happened to
be Mother's Day, 1999 -- leading to a pretty good supposition that if Garnett
was ever going to wish Timmy a Happy Mother's Day, it was that day.
(curiously, the T'Wolves were almost always out of the playoffs by Mother's
Day in other years and when they were in at that juncture (2004), they were
playing the Kings and not the Spurs).


That's the game it supposedly happened. Supposedly, when Duncan was shooting
free throws, Garnett said, "Happy Mother's Day, mother fucker."


另外，有疑似Ron Artest對這件事情的評論：

Unpredictable? How about Ron Artest, the NBA's Jesse James to Duncan's Wyatt
Earp. The combustible Sacramento King told Dime Magazine this season that he
likes the way Duncan plays.

Artest explained: "I remember one time Kevin Garnett was mushing him, and
shoving him in the face; and Tim Duncan didn't do anything, he didn't react.
He just kicked Kevin Garnett's a--, and won the damn championship. You know
what I'm sayin'? That's gangsta. Everybody can show emotion, dunk on
somebody, scream and be real cocky; but Tim Duncan is a ... he's a pimp."

Only the creative cloudy thinking of Ron Artest could put "Tim Duncan" and
"pimp" in the same sentence -- but that's part of the big guy's marketability
deficit. In terms of swagger, he's more plumber than pimp. He's as edgy as a
sphere.

我相信我的翻譯基本上沒有扭曲原作者的意思，
不過到底作者的意思是如字面意義那樣，還是跟第10點一樣帶有反諷的用法，
就有每個人各有解讀的空間。
我個人是認為從標題的「Myth」來看，配合這整篇文章的文風，
作者應該是用了一些誇張的語氣在反諷。
更何況，所有這篇文章的讀者應該都會了解TD對這個話題的態度是什麼，
所以我想應該是完全沒有必要在這裡繼續討論下去。

以下這段某程度上是特別為某位人士準備的，
因為我並沒有特別要戰KG的興趣，不過，
如果要說有誰打從一開始就特別不想打中鋒的話，
KG絕對是相當著名的案例，他甚至為此不惜以高報矮，
堅持不肯承認自己有七呎的身高。
這在今年Doc Rivers不得不讓他轉打中鋒之後，也再度成為話題。

Quicker...and in most cases taller. Official NBA records list him as
6-foot-11, but this, too, can be found in the deli section.

“We used to say that he was 6-13,” Saunders said with a laugh. “He never
wanted to be a 7-footer because he never wanted to be a center. He thought he
would be labeled as a center, and he didn’t want that. But he’s at least
7-1. Ryan Hollins is a pretty big guy (listed at 7-feet even), and when they
stand there together and KG stands up straight, he’s an inch and a half
taller than Ryan.”

It’s just one more in Garnett’s collection of contradictions. A 7-footer
who wants to blend in, a dominant scorer who wants to fit in.

This was either something to be admired, more a work of craftsmanship than
pure sport, the purest expression of the artistry of the Spurs or else it was
just another mind-numbingly boring display of the interminable snoozefest
that the Spurs pass off as basketball. Myles Brown said “Why do people think
watching something that works well is so boring?” and then twenty minutes
later Netw3rk said, “The Spurs ‘brand’ has been more or less in place for
over a decade … and the sports fan at-large doesn’t want it. It bores them.
” For a long time, I agreed with the latter. One of my first articles for
this site was, after all, about Tim Duncan and was titled “More Like Power
Bore-wards.” But beginning with when I took a closer look at the layered and
deceptively simple way their plays work, I began to turn the corner on the
Spurs. Suddenly, I was looking forward to watching them play the Clippers,
and the reason is plain: the Spurs are an acquired taste, like black coffee
or whiskey.

The essence of an acquired taste is that you have to want to acquire it
before you actually know if you like it. This is supremely counterintuitive.
But there aren’t very many people who get their first taste of black coffee
and say, “Man, this is what I’ve been missing!” No: you ease yourself into
it with drinks that please your sweet tooth, with frappucinos and other
things that are more like milkshakes than coffee. And a lot of people will
stay right there, enjoying their coffee with whip cream and chocolate syrup,
but some people will eventually decide they want to be discerning about their
coffee not as a drink, but as coffee. As an experience unto itself. Things
like getting your coffee beans whole to grind yourself becomes important.
Having a coffee maker that keeps the water at the right temperature and ready
all the time becomes important. In some ways, it means not just liking the
thing but liking that you like it.

So it goes—if you’re not someone who just grew up with them—with the
Spurs, and Kevin Arnovitz hit on this in his excellent post about their
motion weak offense. It’s a beautiful explanation of how the Spurs subtly
derange the defense by having Tony Parker hand the ball off on one wing and
cut through the paint to receive it on the other wing. In essence, Arnovitz’
s case is that this shouldn’t be boring because almost anything can happen
at any point in the play because it gives the Spurs so many options: if the
defense is napping, Parker can get the handoff back and drive the lane; if
Duncan has good position on the low block, he can get the ball and back his
man down; if the swingman at the top of the arc is Bonner, he can shoot the
three if he’s open; and on and on and on. It sounds great on paper, but there
’s a problem with how it’s received by the average basketball fan, and
Arnovitz actually points it out himself. “The final resort of the Spurs’
 signature set,” he writes, “looks like the first strike from most teams —
 a simple angle pick-and-roll on the left side with a variety of
drive-and-dish options for Parker.” All that motion, all that glorious
stuff, can end up looking like what most teams start with, and that’s why it
seems boring. If you can’t see the intricacies that got Parker the ball on
the opposite wing, if you can’t see how it’s gotten Duncan better post
position on the weak side or how it’s freed up a wing at the top of the arc,
then it just looks like noise.

But this is just another part of an acquired taste because the onus is on you
to understand it, not on the object to become more likable. If someone says
they like whiskey and then goes on to say they drink Southern Comfort,
someone who’s actually into whiskey will point out that Southern Comfort is
technically a whiskey-flavored liqueur. And that’s the thing: a taste that
requires acquiring is not about figuring out what you like about something. It
’s about learning something new outside yourself, about bringing that thing
into your understanding.
