In a move nobody saw coming, the San Antonio Spurs have waived Stephen
Jackson — a regular part of their rotation who has been out with a sprained
ankle. Art Garcia of NBA.com was first with the story.
Because he was waived after March 1, Jackson cannot be picked up by another
team and put on a playoff roster. It is well past that deadline.
Jackson has not been good this season — he averages 6.2 points a game on
37.3 percent shooting overall and 27.1 percent from three. He has a PER of
8.1. That the Spurs would want to carve out the roster space and bring in
someone younger who can help them makes sense.
It’s the timing of the thing that has been odd. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo
Sports talked about that on twitter.
