Extension talks between Leonard, Spurs at a standstill



SAN ANTONIO — The Spurs have until Friday to reach a contract extension with
small forward Kawhi Leonard, lest he become a restricted free agent next
summer. Barring significant movement in the final week of negotiations, the
Finals MVP appears headed in that direction.

The Express-News can confirm the gist of this morning’s Yahoo! Sports
report: Leonard is seeking a maximum extension, and the Spurs are balking at
giving it to him.

Spurs general manager R.C. Buford and Leonard’s agent, Brian Elfus, have met
multiples times over the past several weeks, with no extension deal imminent.

Leonard, 23, averaged 12.8 points and 6,2 rebounds last season, and is
considered one of the NBA’s top wing defenders. He is entering the final
season of his standard rookie-scale contract, which will pay $2.89 million.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has called Leonard the future face of the
franchise. The Spurs have no plans on letting him get away. Yet there are
several avenues for locking up Leonard past this season.

If the Spurs were to make Leonard their “designated player,” they could
sign him to a five-year, $90 million extension. They could also offer him a
four-year deal at maximum money. If Leonard is to hit the restricted free
agent market, he is expected to draw interest at a maximum level. The Spurs
almost certainly would match any offer sheet he signs.

The danger, as Yahoo! Sports points out, would be in Leonard signing a
short-term offer sheet like Chandler Parsons did in Dallas last summer.
Parsons inked a three-year, $46 million with a player option in the final
season, allowing him to become a unrestricted free agent in 2016.

Such a scenario might actually be financially beneficial to Leonard, as he
would hit the market after the NBA’s lucrative new television deal kicks in
and raises the league-wide salary cap.

Restricted free agency, however, can be a dicey proposition for players,
especially those expected to garner maximum-level offers. Teams can be
reticent about tying up money at a crucial juncture of free agency on an
agreement that a player’s original club is almost certain to match.

It is a game of cat-and-mouse the Spurs and Leonard’s camp will continue to
play. There is still time for a breakthrough, but Friday’s deadline is
looming.

2. 如果讓可愛成為RFA，萬一可愛和其他隊伍簽下像Parson那種合約（三年約尤其帶有球
　 員選項，於2016年變成為完全自由球員），馬刺即使跟進也很危險。

3. 現在馬刺制服組和可愛團隊就很像在玩貓捉老鼠的遊戲一樣，還有時間尋求突破，但禮
　 拜五（美國時間）已經越來越近了。
