"Amelie" film score composed by Yann Tiersen Virgin, 10790 Composer and multi-instrumentalist Tiersen (http://www.yanntiersen.com) has been making records since 1995. His music is tuneful and ingratiating, and a penchant for waltz meter and accordions helps it sound very French. Tiersen's compositions have been compared to those of Simon Jeffes of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and I'd add a comparison to the toy instrument ensembles of fellow Frenchman Pascal Comelade--in other words, easy to like, hard to categorize. Filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet, whose movies include "The City of Lost Children" and "Alien Resurrection", wanted to make make a different kind of film with "Amelie"--something lighter, charming, and more humane. On a car ride during the period Jeunet was working on the film, someone popped a Yann Tiersen CD into the player. Apparently Jeunet immediately felt the affinity between Tiersen's music and the tone he wanted for his film. Both are colorful and a bit eccentric. While the real test of a film score is how it works in the context of the movie (and this one sure works well), Tiersen's "Amelie" score is a great listen on it's own when you want some genuinely charming Gallic charm. "L'Absente" composed by Yann Tiersen Labels/Virgin, 8101152 Tiersen's other 2001 release is "L'Absente," a CD of songs as well as instrumentals. The range is wider here than in "Amelie," and that's appropriate since the album's topic is "Absence." There's charm here, too, but with a pleasant dose of what the Portuguese call "saudade," or sweet sadness. One of the songs layers a melody on top of what serves as a purely instrumental track on "Amelie," turning it into quite a different piece. American composer and singer (and former Spinning On Air guest) Lisa Germano shows up singing two Tiersen songs--as far as I know her first new recordings since quitting the business a couple years ago. I'm glad her disappearance was temporary, and it's great to hear her expressive, whispered groan of a voice accompanied by orchestra.
