England team defend apologetic Seaman
DAVID SEAMAN has apologised to England fans following his only mist
ake of the World Cup.
Our experienced goalkeeper has been one of the best shot-stoppers in
the tournament, but was caught out in England's 2-1 quarter-final
defeat to Brazil.
Seaman advanced off his line ready to claim the ball from Ronaldinho's
30 yard free-kick, but then watched in horror as the Brazilian striker
looped the set piece over his head and into the net off the underside
of the crossbar.
It proved to be the winning goal and the 38-year-old was visibly upset
at the final whistle and when bravely talking to the media after the game.
"It is very hard to take but that's just life as a goalkeeper. The main
thing is I want to say sorry to the fans," Seaman said.
"I want to say sorry to the people I've let down today. That's just the
way it goes."
However, England team-mate Teddy Sheringham insists Seaman has nothing
to be sorry for after an impressive World Cup tournament overall.
"David could be upset but it is not his fault," he said. "Things like
that happen. In my opinion he is still the world's best."
England captain David Beckham also defended Seaman, insisting he has
nothing to feel bad about after an excellent tournament.
Seaman had been beaten just once in four games going into the match
against Brazil and had played a major part in England's progress to
the quarter-finals with a number of key saves.
Beckham explained: "We are very proud of the team and the goalkeeper.
People didn't expect us to get through the first stages and it is a
bonus to get this far.
"The goal wasn't David's fault. It was a fluke goal that was a cross
which ended up a goal.
"If he is made a scapegoat it is an absolute disgrace. He has been the
best goalkeeper in the tournament."
