Damon,Ming set for home opener
After 45 days of Spriing Training and a week-long tuip to the West Coast to start
the season,the Yankees are finally headed home.
The Yankees will host the Royals in the Yankee Stadium opener on Tuesday,
looking to biold on their big win over the Angels on Sunday afternoon.
"Yankee Stadium is very special most the time but Opening Day is pretty dam
special,"said manager Joe Torre."We're anxious to go home.It's been two months
sonce most of us have been home.It's been a long time.
New York had dropped four straight before beating Bartolo Colon,with the win
providing a positive vibe geading into Monday's off-day.
"We're not happy about being 2-4 but it's better than 1-5,"said Johnny Damon.
"This team started out bad last year, so they know how to come back.With all
the talent in this room,there's no reason we can't roll off a very long winning
streak."
Damon will surely be in the spotlight on Tuesday as he takes the field at the
Stadium for the first time in pinstripes. After four years as a member of the
enermy Red Sox,Damon is looking forward to seing what life is like on the other
side.
Alex Rodriguez,who had his own home opener experience two years ago,believes that
Damon will have no problem eith the pressure that comes along with wearing thw
historic uniform.
"I think Johnny is made for New York,"Rodriguez said."I think he's going to do
great and the fans are really going to welcome him.I think he's a perfect fit."
