Lecture 3 Precipitation
一開始就是最常見的開頭方式，上禮拜我們講到了precipitation, 然後稍微
複習一下說，precipitation要發生，air mass必須rise and expand. Air
mass rise 時溫度會下降，moisture就會condense. Enough condensation
就形成了precipitation. 再來就帶出有三種可以使air mass rise and
therefore cool and condense.
又複習了一下第一種是convectional: 離地表近的暖空氣上升，然後被冷空
氣取代。
第二種是frontal precipitation: 兩種不同溫度和密度的 air masses
meet up 然後暖空氣 being lifted above the colder air.
講到今天重點：第三種precipitation跟land barrier有關，像mountain
ranges, hills. 正常的風吹碰到land barrier就會被迫往上，這種叫
orographic precipitation.
最常見的情況就是山脈runs perpendicular (垂直) to the prevailing
winds. 舉例說吹西風吹到某座山的西邊，會分散到北跟南邊。Windward
side(迎風坡), 會有較多的precipitation.
馬上舉例了，southern Alps in New Zealand, 說這邊的風從long
distance的海吹來，夾帶大量moisture, 當風hit mountains,會將下大量雨
水，每年有12 meters這麼多，跟leeward side（背風波）只有不到 1
meter相差很多。
繼續下個subtopic, 說這樣的情況下，迎風坡會有較多vegetation and
animal lifes, 氣候跟背風坡也會截然不同。說到背風坡像rain shadow,
像站在building的shadow照不到太陽。
繼續說到除了氣候不同外，erosion也很不一樣。形成山脈的這些石頭都長年
受precipitation影響。mountain不只會造成precipitation, 更會
intensify it. 舉例：靠太陽的那一面山脈因為高溫照射而加溫，此暖空氣
跟吹過來的冷鋒mix 會使得air mass unstable, 接著使對流旺盛，導致
thunderstorm.
最後說orographic precipitation會受到barrier size影響，跟降雨分布位
置有關。
mountain會集中在山峰下來一點點的位置，但是如果是hill的話，會直接下
在crest上。最後提到態度題：And even though the project was
completed a long time ago, its results were still interesting. Let
’s take a look at that now.
