這是插入句(parenthesis)的用法哦，
你可以看成accused him of being scared, to use a different metaphor(換句話說),
of chickening out.
至於為什麼要插在of後面，而不是of前面(雖然我認為也是對的)，
那是種藝術，不是我能解釋的 XD

: 這句文法，後面的結構不懂= =

attempts是主詞，
這句話是說"各種並不完全能令人信服的企圖"
various和not entirely convincing都是來修飾attempt的~
