JUSTICE FOUNDATION
AWARDS PRIZE
Last month, the world was surprised to learn that Witold Taszycki had been
chosen as this year's Fenaway Prize winner. Last night in his acceptance speech,
the relatively unknown Polish writer claimed that he was as surprised as anyone.
"I will probably be shocked for the rest of my life," he joked to an audience
of 800. But he quickly continued. "This is also an honor that I will cherish
for the rest of my life."
Although he is the author of over 30 novels, the sixty-five-year-old
Taszycki has never enjoyed much fame. When he was first published at the age
of twenty-five, he told the crowd, he was happy if even a single book sold.
For the first 20 years of his career, he only had time to write at night,
as he was supporting his family by working as a legal clerk during the day.
exploring the powerful themes of social justice and human compassion that
have characterized his work. "Because my works are more philosophical in nature
and not packed with action, there hasn't been a large market for them,"
the author conceded. But all that is about to change.
Since last month's announcement, Taszycki has received several offers to
have his books translated into other languages, beginning with his latest work,
The Trials of Aleksander.
The Fenaway Prize is awarded annually to authors who have demonstrated
outstanding artistic accomplishments in works related to social justice.
The prize is named for Arthur Fenaway, a respected judge from Boston who
established the Justice Foundation in 1952 to address issues of global
inequality.
