''Qualies'' (day 2): Local heroes By Andrew Lilley Wednesday, May 24, 2006 The women's singles qualifiers began on Tuesday, with some surprise exits and a good showing from the local girls. Not to be outdone, the French men also flew the flag, whilst the Brits were less fortunate. Anyone expressing doubts as to the quality of the qualifying tournament at Roland Garros should speak to Romina Oprandi. Only a week ago, the young Italian was living the dream as she made it into the quarter finals at the prestigious Rome Masters, delighting her home crowd and giving Svetlana Kuznetsova the fright of her life. Fast forward to this Tuesday, and there she is on court n°6 having to qualify for the French Open. Despite being n°1 seed in this pre-tournament, and now ranked 95th in the world after her exploits in Rome, Oprandi almost came back down to earth with a bump. Yung-Jan Chan, ranked 182nd, was a set to the good and even broke service in the second before Oprandi got things back on track and came through in three sets.
