Venus Vanquished By Flavia;Chan into Maiden Final
Flavia Pennetta caused the biggest upset of this year's ptt Bangkok Open
when she sensationally ousted Venus Williams in Saturday's semifinals.
Meeting her in the final of the $200,000, Tier III event will be Chan
Yung-Jan, who battled past Yan Zi to reach her first Sony Ericsson WTA
Tour final.
The other semifinal clash was a similarly exhilarating affair, with Chan
and Yan entertaining the crowds on centre court for well over two hours.
Neither player are seeded this week and it was China's Yan who emerged
from the opening exchanges on top, breaking serve in the fourth game
before easing into an early 4-1 lead. However, the 18-year-old Chan
was not giving up without a fight and hit back in emphatic fashion to
take six of the next seven games and with it the set.
A flurry of service breaks greeted the start of the second set and after
this early excitement it was the 22-year old Yan who regained her composure
to take the final three games and level the match up. Chinese Taipei's Chan
drew first blood in the decider, breaking serve to love in the second game,
before immediately relinquishing her advantage in identical fashion. Nevertheless,
the teenager was not to be denied and after two hours, 21 minutes on court
broke serve to wrap up an epic 75 36 75 win.
"It was a really exciting match today," Chan said, "but I'm really proud
I managed to get the win in such a high-quality match. Yan Zi played very
well also, so throughout I just tried to stay focus and play with confidence
and luckily in the end I came out on top. I'm looking forward to the final
and it will be tough, but I will just go out there and do my best."
