Baghdad Wedding, directed by Lisa Goldman, opened in June 2007 to critical acclaim at the Soho Theatre. It is the first play by Hassan Abdulrazzak, who, since fleeing Iraq and after time in Egypt and Algeria, settled in London. Baghdad Wedding concerns the experience of three ex-patriot Iraqis who return to their country after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, and covers the time period between 1998 until 2005. The story depicts that how even in a time of immense crisis people can still love, dream and pursue ambitions in life. The play takes a decidedly Iraqi perspective on the effects of the conflict in Iraq, and also takes a look at Iraq's London exiles, all coming to grips with the destruction of their homeland and the wide-spread media and opinions surrounding their country, the war and their culture. The George Devine award is an annual award that awards new writing for theatre. Coming with a prize of £10 000, it is open to any playwright for an original stage play, which need not have been produced. It was set up in 1966 as a memorial to the life and talent of the founding Artistic Director of the Royal Court, George Devine. Previous notable winners of the George Devine Award include Edward Bond, Mike Leigh, Hanif Kureishi, Martin McDonagh, Conor McPherson, Leo Butler and Richard Bean. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 82.15.254.248
