The Timberwolves on Friday traded point guard Sam Cassell to the
Los Angeles Clippers in a package deal for guard Marko Jaric.

The Wolves also sent a protected 2006 first-round draft pick to the Clippers,
who included guard Lionel Chalmers in the trade for Cassell.

"It's just a move that the organization thought we wanted to make.
We wanted to go in a different direction," Wolves coach Dwane Casey said.
"Marko is younger, a big point guard. He has international experience.
He can defend ones, twos or threes."

The draft pick is protected, meaning if the Wolves don't make the playoffs
and get a lottery pick, they keep the pick. If Minnesota makes the playoffs,
the Clippers get the pick.

Cassell spent two seasons with Minnesota, helping the team get to the
Western Conference finals in 2003-2004.
