Randy Wittman figures he's got nothing to lose.
After three losses in four games since the All-Star break, the Timberwolves
coach mixed and matched, tinkered and analyzed during a scrimmage-heavy
practice Thursday. By his own admission, he's searching for something that
will get his team to click, and changing his rotation might be the way to do
it.

The Wolves (26-31) are only two games out of a playoff spot in the Western
Conference. There was a time when winning the division was a goal. That might

"I think winning the division is out of the picture," Ricky Davis said. "I

Wittman wasn't promising startling changes, or even changes to the starting
lineup. But he does want to figure out a way for his team to get out of the
blocks better; the Wolves have been ahead after the first quarter only three
times since Wittman took over as coach in Jan. 23.

working together."

Wittman challenged the players not in the starting lineup to play well enough
to force their way into his rotation. So far, that hasn't happened.

Still, given his intention to look at different groups of players, it figures
that guard Troy Hudson and forward Justin Reed -- both of whom have played
little of late -- would be in line for some minutes as Wittman searches for
the right mix.

During practice, Wittman looked at a smaller lineup that included Hudson

for a team that has struggled so mightily on the road, salvaging a victory
tonight against the Jazz -- which would give them a 2-3 homestand -- is key.

the season to be doing that. We still believe we can get it done. We just
