Kevin McHale, the Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations,
blames the media for starting rumors that Kevin Garnett is going to be traded.
"You always say, 'We'll see what happens,' but every year it's the same
thing," McHale said. "Some guy in a blog writes something and then everybody
runs with it. You guys are in the reaction business, to people who are just
making things up, and it's just unbelievable."
With those words, McHale is denying reports that he has talked to the Celtics
and the Suns about trading Garnett, despite what ESPN.com and other websites
are saying.
"You talk to every team in the draft right now and you say, 'What are you
looking at? Who are you looking at? What are you trying to do to your team?'
" McHale said. "So at this time of the year, you talk to every team multiple
times."
Personally, I would be shocked if the Wolves decided to trade Garnett. I
don't think owner Glen Taylor would approve the deal. Can you imagine what
would happen to the season-ticket base if they did trade Garnett? It would be
a disaster.
The Wolves have the No. 7 pick in the NBA draft, but McHale said he is not
opposed to moving up or down.
"Well, I'm pretty happy at seven, but again we'll see what happens," he said.
"... I think there's enough guys. I know personally I like eight, nine guys
in this draft a lot, so I'm really happy at seven.
"We'll get an NBA-ready player, but a young player. He'll be a guy that can
come in and be an NBA player, I don't think there's any doubt about that. So,
yeah those guys are out there."
