LAS VEGAS — NBA summer league rosters rarely are similar to the
corresponding teams' regular-season versions, but in the Timberwolves' case,
their play in July at least might give an indication for the future of the
franchise.
The Wolves' roster featured the team's past three first-round draft picks —
Rashad McCants (2005), Randy Foye ('06) and Corey Brewer ('07) — as well as
its two most recent second-round picks, Craig Smith (2006) and Chris Richard
('07), and the team's hope is that all five are significant contributors in
the regular season.
The Wolves wrapped up play in Las Vegas on Sunday, finishing the league 4-1.
Smith and Foye, last year's summer league MVP, were named to the 2007 first
team.
In five games, Smith averaged 21.8 points on 62.9 percent shooting from the
floor, as well as 6.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 blocks in 32.8 minutes.
Foye averaged 18.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 33.2 minutes.
A look back at their five games:
MONDAY, JULY 9
Wolves 85, New Orleans 83 (OT)
Brewer scored seven of his 16 points in the final minute of regulation and in
OT, including a drive with 13 seconds left that clinched the victory.
Brewer made five of 13 shot attempts and added eight rebounds in 32 minutes.
"I love crunch time," he said. "That's when you have to make a play."
Smith led all scorers with 25 points.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 11
Wolves 79, San Antonio 68
Foye — the 2006 summer league MVP — scored 22 points, and the Wolves held
on after jumping out to a 30-14 lead after one quarter.
"With this being my second year, I see myself as a leader on this [summer
league] team," Foye said. "I'm the point guard, so I have to control the
tempo and be a general out there."
Smith added 21 points and McCants had 17.
Brewer scored only eight points and shot 1-for-10 from the floor but grabbed
a team-high 13 rebounds.
THURSDAY, JULY 12
Los Angeles Clippers 85, Wolves 73
The Wolves shot only 35.1 percent from the floor and saw the Clippers break
open a close game with a 13-0 run to start the fourth quarter.
McCants shot only 1-for-12 and scored five points, and Brewer was 2-for-12
for eight points. Foye scored 23 and Smith 17.
Clippers star center Chris Kaman, playing in the summer league because he
wanted to get into shape after struggling with his weight and injuries last
season, scored 15 points for Los Angeles, as did Paul Davis, a former
Michigan State standout.
SATURDAY, JULY 14
Wolves 102, Memphis 91
The Wolves led by 19 entering the fourth quarter and held on, weathering a
15-2 run by the Grizzlies to start the period.
Foye scored 16 points in the first quarter. He finished with a game-high 28
points on 12-for-17 shooting.
"I felt good, I went out there and played hard," Foye said. "I took the shots
when I had them and tried to get my teammates involved."
Smith had 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting, and Brewer had 18 points and 11
rebounds.
SUNDAY, JULY 15
Wolves 84, Phoenix 81
McCants had 30 of his 32 points in the first half and the Wolves outlasted
the Suns.
The Wolves, who led 30-15 after one quarter, fell behind with less than five
minutes left in the game but retook the lead for good at 80-78 when Smith hit
a jump shot with 1:18 to go. Foye hit only one of two free throws with three
seconds left, but Phoenix threw the ball away on the inbounds play.
"I was feeling good," McCants said. "I kind of felt like I had something to
prove in this last game; I felt like I was underachieving. I wanted to come
out early and make a statement."
