Antoine Walker’s agent is working to get him out of Minnesota and onto a
playoff team, but that remains a substantial `if’ to happen by a Saturday
deadline.
“We’re trying to find a solution that makes sense,” agent Mark Bartelstein
said Monday. “We’re trying to find something, if it ever comes together.
There’s a lot at stake, a lot involved. But nothing’s been decided at this
point.”
Ultimately, it all comes down to money. How much of his guaranteed contract
Walker — finishing an $8.5 million contract this season, due $9.3 million —
is willing to leave on the table and how big a check Wolves owner Glen
Taylor is willing to write to get rid of a guy destined to sit behind the
bench wearing a suit.
Walker might become easier to trade this summer, with just one year left on
his contract and his big salary slot coming due and his contract could be
used as a chip in swinging a bigger deal.
It still looks like a bit of a long shot that something will happen by
Saturday’s deadline for Walker to clear waivers, but you never know…
Walker wants out because he says he has accomplished too much and still has
too much to offer to sit on the bench while the Wolves play their future.
Veteran Greg Buckner, though, said he was happy to see last week’s trade
deadline pass without his name called.
“I didn’t want to go,” he said. “I like Minnesota a lot. Right now, we’
re trying to figure out a mix of young guys who are going to be here long
term. I’m going to be here for a while, so I’m happy. The team is going in
the right direction, so I didn’t want to move. I want to be a part of this
team when we turn this thing around and are a playoff contender, a
championship contender.”
