Gaziantep gives up on Metsu
Gaziantepspor has abandoned its attempts to bring in successful Senegal coach Bruno Metsu for the new season, announced chairman Celal Dogan. After Metsu again failed to arrive in Turkey on Thursday, the club telephoned him and, according to Dogan, he said that he was still under contract to Senegal and had also been approached by the French Football Association. He asked for a further delay in negotiating a final contract with Gaziantep. But, Dogan continued, "We have no remaining patience for waiting.
A team trains under the direction of a coach. We need to make a decision on a coach right away. I'm sorry Metsu isn't coming. Gheorghe Hagi, who was on our list, told us that he would not train the team this year. In these circumstances, we have begun talks with other foreign coaches. We will reach the correct decision as soon as possible."
Tottenham in for Fatih?
English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur is willing to pay 4.5 million Euros for Fenerbahce and Turkey defender Fatih Akyel according to agent Ahmet Bulut. Bulut is the man who brokered Fatih's move from Galatasaray to Real Mallorca in 2001. The player failed to settle in Spain and soon returned to Turkey to join Fener.
Lucescu: 'Hakan transfer difficult'
Besiktas coach Mircea Lucescu described the proposed transfer of striker Hakan Sukur from Parma as "difficult". Speaking to Fanatik (July 5), Lucescu said, "The directors spoke to Hakan and reached agreement. I called Parma general manager Arrigo Sacchi and he told me they can only release Yugoslav striker Savo Milosevic at the moment. They are not thinking of letting Hakan go. The transfer is a bit difficult but our negotiations are still continuing."
Washington problem solved, says Fener
The problem over the transfer of Brazilian forward Washington has been resolved according to a statement from Fenerbahce. Washington had been refusing to leave Brazil until he received full payment from his former club Ponte Preta which was not forthcoming because Ponte Preta had been unable to cash Fener's check for the first instalment of the transfer fee. The statement said that the Brazilian club has now received the money and Washington is expected in Istanbul by tomorrow at latest. He will travel
on to join the rest of the squad at its summer training camp in Germany.
Barca wants Hasan
Barcelona's Dutch coach Louis van Gaal is determined to sign Galatasaray forward Hasan Sas and vice-chairman Joan Castells told a press conference that the club is prepared to offer another striker, Dani, in part exchange. Castells pointed out that Galatasaray had approached Barca about Dani a month ago and continued, "We know the Turkish team is interested in our player, in which case we can reach agreement." Dani is 27 years old and made a bright start for Barcelona when he joined from Real Madrid but
has since been overshadowed by other players and made only one appearance last season when he was troubled by a series of injuries.
Hami in the capital
Veteran striker Hami Mandirali, declared surplus to requirements by Trabzonspor, has, as expected, signed a one-year contract with Ankaragucu and traveled to Bolu to join coach Ersun Yanal and the squad at their summer training camp. Ankaragucu will be Hami's first Turkish club other than Trabzon but he has no doubts that he can succeed in the capital. "What I have done is the guarantee of what I'm going to do," he said.
Tolunay off to Austria
Former Trabzonspor, Galatasaray and Turkey midfielder Tolunay Kafkas has signed a one-year contract with Pasching, newly-promoted to the Austrian First Division, reported daily Milliyet. Tolunay captained Denizlispor last season but was released when his contract expired. In Auatria, he will take language and coaching courses as well as playing for Pasching.
Medals on the way
The 23 members of Turkey's World Cup squad plus coach Senol Gunes and his two assistants are to receive the State Exalted Service Medal after a proposal from the Council of Ministers for the award was ratified by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. Sports Minister Fikret Unlu said that it had been intended to award a single medal to the Turkish Soccer Federation to mark the team's success in finishing third at the World Cup but that this was impossible because legally the Exalted Service Medal may only be
given to individuals.
