Barcelona eyes keeper Rustu -- and Cordoba

As Turkey's squad continues its preparations in Newcastle for
Wednesday's Euro 2004 qualifier against England, there is renewed
transfer speculation about one of its key members.
Spanish newspaper Sport reported that Barcelona is out to sign
goalkeeper Rustu Recker next season and if that move fails Besiktas
had better be on its guard because the next target is its Colombian
Oscar Cordoba.
Sport quoted Barca vice-chairman Didac Ramirez as follows: "Next
season either Rustu or Cordoba will be in goal for us. We have spoken
to both of them and have received a positive response. Our first choice
is Rustu because he is the world's number two keeper. We're not keen on
number one (Oliver) Kahn because of his age."
Rustu is under contract to Fenerbahce until the end of the current
season. There have been reports that he has agreed a contract extension
but so far as we are aware nothing has yet been signed and Rustu appeared
to confirm this in his last public statement on the matter.
This came at the March 21 press conference in which he took part
alongside new Fener captain Umit Ozat and vice-captain Ceyhun Eris.
Speaking of next season, Rustu said, "My aim is to talk first to
Fenerbahce and reach agreement."
Ambivalence
For several years now Rustu has been extremely ambivalent about
moving outside Turkey. There is a pattern to this. He starts a season
saying that his ambition has always been to play in a major European
league and that it will be his last year with Fener. However, when
decision time comes around he changes his mind and decides that he owes
another season to the Fener fans.
This has become almost a ritual. Rustu is the most capped goalkeeper
in Turkish history and amongst the most capped players in any position.
At the World Cup last summer he established himself as a member of the
international elite. However, he is now 29.
That is no great age for a keeper. Many continue playing well into
their thirties and 40-year-olds at the top level of the game are by no
means uncommon. Rustu, though, has been notably injury prone in the
recent past and neither he nor anybody else can guarantee how many years
he has left in him. If he really wants to leave Istanbul and try his luck
abroad now might be the time to do it while he is still in demand. As well
as Barca, Arsenal and Manchester United have expressed interest in him
since the World Cup.
Cordoba
Barcelona's current custodian is Argentina number one Roberto Bonano
who seems to be out of favor with coach Radomir "Radi" Antic. Again there
should be an age factor here since Bonano turned 33 in January.
But if that is the case Cordoba would be an odd choice as replacement
since he is only one month younger. With the Colombian, there is a
complicating factor. Besiktas does not hold his registration. He is playing
for the Black Eagles on losn from Argentine club Boca Juniors.
Although Besiktas chairman Serdar Bilgili has pledged to obtain his
registration, no such deal has yet been done and reports from Argentina
suggest Boca wants Cordoba back. If Barca now makes a move for him,
there is a 3-way tussle in prospect.
Antic
Turkish daily Fanatik followed up the Sport story by contacting Radi
Antic. He confirmed the words of his vice-chairman.
"Rustu approached us positively," he said, "but he's in contact with
other teams. At the moment we're just waiting for his answer. I hope he
will join us. If not we'll turn to Cordoba."
We wonder whether Fener and Besiktas previously knew about Barcelona's
approaches. We also hope that Rustu is not paying too much attention to
the speculation right now. Turkey needs him with a clear mind on Wednesday.
