節錄每日新聞報的評論:
Fenerbahce's visit to Trabzon this evening was already the main talking
point of the weekend's Super League program for neutrals.
Interest was ratcheted up a few more notches late on Wednesday when Fener
dropped another of its periodic bombshells. The club has parted company
with German goalkeeper Robert Enke who has only played two matches in the
Fener colors, one of which was a friendly against second division
Kocaelispor. Fenerbahce used its website, which has become its preferred
method of relaying board decisions, to make the announcement with the bald
statement:
"In the light of the views of our coach Christoph Daum, we have mutually
canceled the contract of goalkeeper Robert Enke whom we signed from
Barcelona because he will be unable to adjust."
That is the official version, but already journalists close to Fener
board members and club officials have been beavering away at trying to
discover what really happened and we have 3 different unofficial versions.
Here you pays your money and you takes your choice:
Version 1: Enke asked to leave because he was demoralized by the criticism
he received after conceding 3 goals against Istanbulspor on Sunday.
Version 2: Coach Daum had already decided to drop Enke for the Trabzonspor
match. When he learned of this, Enke was furious and told Daum that he had
come to play on the first team, not sit on the bench. Daum reacted by
telling him to try his luck elsewhere.
Version 3: Daum simply decided that the man he brought to Istanbul and
personally vouched for was not up to the job.
The true story may be any one of the above or, more likely, some
combination of the three, but surely the early release of Enke amounts to
an admission of failure on Daum's part. How the board can claim that he
will be "unable to adjust" we do not know since he has been given little
chance to do so.
As we said before and after Sunday's debacle, Enke was thrown straight
into the Istanbulspor game after having been benched by Barca for more
than two years and with only the Kocaeli knockabout, in which he was not
seriously tested, as match practice. In the circumstances, it was hardly
fair to expect him to perform miracles or even to perform competently.
The Fener supporters seemed to realize this. There was ironic applause late
in the game whenever Enke handled the ball, but compared to what they have
done to certain other players in the past, the fans treated him with
kid gloves.
Media reaction has not been quite so mild. Enke has been lambasted for
incompetence and Daum for signing him and not only in Turkey. The Spanish
sports press has been having a field day, jeering at Fener for making a
stupid transfer and thanking Daum for taking Enke off Barca's hands. (=__=)
Barca, by the way, may yet have something to say about the situation.
Fener has canceled Enke's personal contract, not the loan agreement with
the Catalan club and what becomes of that will depend on its prescise
terms. Fener will be further embarrassed if Barcelona is able to say,
"You contracted with us to take Enke until the end of the season. We're
not taking him back."
