Points were hard to come by during the first quarter as Chicago missed their first eight shots of the night and didn’t get on the board until Linton Johnson hit a jumper almost midway through the quarter.  The hustle play of Jazz rookie Kirk Snyder sparked a stagnant Jazz offensive with four points and two rebounds in just four minutes to play.  The Bulls used their own rookie to give them a boost; Luol Deng scored five points in five minutes, but couldn’t overcome shooting 22 percent, and trailed
20-15 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter found the Jazz trying to protect a five point lead and the Bulls constantly applying pressure, both offensively and defensively.  Ruben Douglas made the most of his six minutes by scoring seven of Utah’s nine points to end the half.  Even though the Bulls shot better from the field, their nine committed turnovers helped the Jazz maintain a small lead at the break.

The Jazz started the second half on a 7-0 run and increased their lead to eleven with Ruben Douglas scoring five of those points.  Utah continued to attack the basket, drawing fouls and getting to the line 15 times.  Bulls other rookie, Ben Gordon, did his best to keep the game within reach; scoring nine points, but still trailed the Jazz heading into the final quarter.

Swarming and pressing defenses limited the Jazz to only two points during the first five minute stretch of the quarter.  The Bulls capitalized on Utah’s inability to score, pulling within three points before Ruben Douglas gave the Jazz a boost with four straight points.

But the Bulls would fight back.  Tough defense and a Ben Gordon layup would cut the lead to one.  After Farmer hit a free throw, Chicago had one last chance to win or tie.  A Mario Austin last-second shot would fall shot, preserving a Jazz victory, 72-70.  The Bulls’ Ben Gordan and Jazz’s Ruben Douglas led all scorers with 20 points.
