Sloan dismisses retirement reports
By Steve Luhm
The Salt Lake Tribune
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan denied reports Monday morning that he is seriously
considering retirement at the end of the season.
"Nothing is any different than it's always been at this stage of the
year," Sloan said prior to his team's practice at the Zions Bank Basketball
Center.
The retirement talk started when the Rocky Mountain News in Denver
reported that Sloan has grown weary of his job in the wake of the Jazz's
disappointing season.
"I don't know what tomorrow will bring," he told the newspaper.
Several Internet sites picked up the story and ran it, even though
Sloan has given the same answer to the same question for years.
The 63-year-old Sloan is finishing his 17th year as head coach of the
Jazz, whose streak of 16 straight winning seasons under him is coming to an
end.
But discouraged?
Sloan doesn't sound like it.
"I think this could
be a fairly decent team, if a couple of things had happened," he said.
Truth be told, Sloan probably considered retirement more seriously last
year than he is right now. His wife, Bobbye, was in the middle of a
six-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She died in June.
"Last year was probably tougher," he said.
