It's the same old song for the Jazz: the Jazz's offense has been around
practically as long as the NBA itself. But with Jerry Sloan at the helm
and some blossoming young stars, the team is winning anyway.

Seems that, for the Jazz to be successful this season, the team should
be employing a radical new offensive scheme drawn up in some top-secret
NASA enclave below the Wasatch Mountains. After all, only four players
remain from the final edition of the John Stockton-Karl Malone Jazz,
last seen in 2003. Run the same offense for 14 years, centered on the
same players, and churn out a 741-375 record--by the time it is over,
you'd better have something new ready.

But the Jazz is winning, in the same old way, despite adding 11 new
players over the past two years. No surprise. Coach Jerry Sloan's
approach goes back to his playing days under Dick Motta in the 1960s
and '70s, and Motta borrowed heavily from Red Auerbach's Celtics. It
could be argued, then, that Sloan's offense is nearly as old as the
NBA itself. Yet opponents are powerless to stop it.

Utah runs a motion offense, using the guards to cut across the lane and
set cross picks and back picks that allow big men to get position. Sloan
adjusted last season (going from a 1-4 setup to a two-guard front), when
the Jazz was low on big men, but it was unmistakably Sloan's offense.
Adding brawny forward Carlos Boozer has allowed Sloan to return to a more
power-based offense, though he still is using the two-guard front.

There are new players, but Sloan is the primary reason behind the Jazz's
4-1 start. He demands execution and gets it. In a 22-point win over the
Warriors, Utah let an 18-point lead dwindle to six at halftime. The team
had played well overall and was on the road, but Sloan ripped the Jazz in
a way that usually causes player backlash. Not for Sloan. This is Sloan's
17th season with the team, and no coach enjoys his level of job security.
He can be more demanding because of it, and he takes advantage.

Utah's talent rivals, and possibly will exceed, that of Sloan's best
teams. Boozer has been outstanding. Shooting guard Gordan Giricek is an
underrated weapon at both ends, and a healthy Matt Harpring is behind
him. Centers Jarron Collins and Mehmet Okur make the position a strength,
hardly thecase during the Greg Ostertag era. Keith McLeod has filled in
well for injured point guards Carlos Arroyo and Raul Lopez.

The fulcrum, though, is lanky 6-9 forward Andrei Kirilenko, who is
averaging 16.0 points while dominating defensively. In a 60-second span
against Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony last week, Kirilenko made two free
throws, beat Anthony for a dunk, forced a turnover and blocked Anthony's
shot on a baseline drive. He has twice racked up eight blocked shots in
a game, and already, MVP whispers have begun.

"They really have (Sloan's) type of guys," says Grizzlies coach Hubie
Brown. "All their frontcourt guys are tough guys, which is key to their
offense. The more physical, the better they like it."

If you look at all of the guys he has on his roster,  those are what
people say are ‘Sloan guys.’ Guys that haven't been able to make it

The young Jazz figures to improve. Giricek, 27, is the oldest starter.
Kirilenko and Boozer are 23. But, naturally, the influx of youth hasn't
forced many alterations from Sloan. "We are still running some of the
plays we ran when I played," he says. "I don't think that has changed a
great deal."
年輕的爵士將會成長. 但這群年輕人的到來卻沒使Sloan做出改變. Sloan說:
