Whaley: Coach didn't cheat for me

If there was cheating going on at Barton County Community College, Robert
Whaley didn't know it. But that doesn't mean the Jazz rookie wasn't aware of
unethical, perhaps illegal, activities.

Whaley once considered Ryan Wolf, his former basketball coach at the Kansas
junior college, to be a close friend. He even stayed with Wolf over Christmas
one year rather than return to his hometown in Michigan.

And while Whaley said he never was involved in fraudulently earning college
credits by taking online courses from Brigham Young University - as several
of his teammates allegedly did with Wolf's help - he did receive improper
benefits.

Wolf occasionally signed Whaley's work-study timesheet, certifying the
6-foot-10 center had worked more hours than he actually had, Whaley said.

The coach would then turn in the forms, pick up the checks for the athletes
and sign the checks.

"He was the coach, so he could do things like that," Whaley said.

Wolf pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud and theft in December in
connection to the work-study program, and is scheduled to be sentenced in
August.

The coach is one of eight Barton County coaches or administrators to be
indicted in federal court on charges ranging from embezzlement to perjury.

Whaley said he let Wolf manage his money because, "I was burning through
it." He doesn't believe Wolf ever skimmed any money from him, but he did
give the coach money for the occasional plane ticket or other item.

"Sometimes he'd ask and I'd give it to him," Whaley said. "I feel bad for
coach, he was one of my best friends. But that is how things develop - you
do stuff you shouldn't do."

Whaley took an online course in astronomy while at Barton County, but cannot
remember which school offered the course, though he is certain it wasn't BYU.

"Wolf was in no way a part of my academics," Whaley said. "He didn't cheat
for me."
