One last look at Jazz's 2005-06 season

I'm still trying to wind down from Utah's 2005-06 season. There's a lot to be
said about it, both good and bad. But while I don't ignore the bad, I'm a
glass-is-half-full kind of guy, so today I want to take a look primarily at
some of the good performances to come out of this season.

First off, I don't think I can say enough about Mehmet Okur and the strides
he's made since putting on a Jazz uniform. Not only has he played in all 164
games of his Utah career, he also made a tremendous leap in productivity for
the team after working out and playing hard during the summer of 2005.

He recorded 35 double-doubles this season - tied with Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki
and Washington's Antawn Jamison.

Of course, I would have liked to see Memo posting up just a little bit more
than he did this season. But with a jumper like his and the range he has with
it, it's hard to fault him too much. I hope the league doesn't forget about
him when it comes time to select its most improved player. He'd definitely
have my vote.

Andrei Kirilenko was able to play in all but 13 games this season, a marked
difference from the 41 games he missed last season on account of injuries.
And being able to be on the court for so many more games only illustrated the
importance of Kirilenko to the Jazz franchise.

Kirilenko is almost certainly the heart and soul of this team's defense. His
shotblocking has already become legendary, and he is also a real ball hawk
when it comes to getting steals. His rebounding is solid, too, as he averaged
eight rebounds per game.

recorded 22 double-doubles and two triple-doubles this season, further
testament to his ability and versatility.

One player who came under a tremendous amount of heat this season was Deron
Williams. Utah's No. 3 overall draft pick came into the season under some
heavy expectations, and when he experienced a slump mid-season that resulted
in fewer minutes, it's a shame that some members of the Salt Lake media
jumped to the conclusion that Williams was a bust at No. 3 and the Jazz were
stupid not to take Chris Paul at that spot.

Fortunately for Williams and Utah, he was able to bounce back, and by the
time the season was over, he had established himself as what he was drafted
to be, Utah's point guard for years to come. His team-leading averages of 4.5
assists and 41.6 percent 3-point shooting - also tops among NBA rookies -
played a key role in the Jazz making a 15-game improvement over last season's
26-56 record.

Well, I think that about does it for my thoughts on Utah's 2005-06 season,
but while we close the books on that, this column will continue through the
summer, maybe a little less frequently, but keeping up with developments in
Utah's draft and free agent prospects, not to mention international play.
