Shooting guard a significant concern for Jazz as draft looms


In last week's column I noted that when it comes to what the Jazz will look
like for the 2006-07 season, franchise owner Larry Miller has made three
points.

One source for getting a long-range bomber, or at least a solid No. 2 guard,
is the upcoming draft. Utah will participate in the NBA draft lottery on May
23, but Jazz fans shouldn't get their hopes up for a high pick. Out of the
1,000 ping-pong balls that will be dumped into the hopper, only five will
sport the Jazz logo. Overall, there is a better than 98 percent chance that
Utah will have the very last lottery pick at No. 14.

There are three shooting guards being mentioned prominently in this year's
draft, two of whom could possibly be available when Utah's turn comes up.

Brandon Roy, a 6-foot-6 All-American guard out of Washington is just what the
Jazz are looking for, but unless Miller and company trade up, he will be long
gone by the time David Stern announces that Utah is on the clock.

best shooting guards in the draft. Based on the millions of mock drafts that
can be found online, both will have already been picked or will still be
available at No. 14, depending on what day it is, which way the wind is
blowing and whether the Fed is going to raise interest rates.

As for Redick's NBA chances, some say he is the best pure shooter to come
into the league since Steve Kerr while others think he will have a tough time
in the league because of his slight stature (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) and his
need to have his teammates set him up for his shots.

As for Redick's size, his dimensions sound very similar to Jeff Hornacek, and
a player who needs screens and motion to get open sounds like the perfect fit
for Jerry Sloan's system.

By contrast, the term "athletic" is usually used to describe the 6-foot-7
Brewer, who would certainly add fast-break finishing ability and 3-point
defense to Utah's resume. But would he add any 3-point offense? Brewer
averaged over 18 points per game for the Hogs this past season, but shot just
.338 from beyond the arc and .441 from the field.

If the Jazz somehow got Redick, would Sloan decide to have play out of

If Brewer ends up being Utah's pick, will he spend time on the bench and in
Sloan's doghouse before being shipped off to find success elsewhere? That's
now called the Kirk Snyder scenario.

There are many things to like about Sloan's system and coaching style. New
player development is not one of them. Whoever the Jazz draft this summer,
don't count on them to do much right away if for no other reason than that
they won't be given the chance to.
