Four more prospects work out for Jazz

The Utah Jazz got a look at four more potential draftees Thursday at the
Zions Bank Basketball Center in Salt Lake City. Connecticut's Rashad Anderson,
Georgetown's Brandon Bowman, Washington's Bobby Jones and North Carolina's
David Noel were able to show their stuff to Jazz coahces and officials.

「They've all had good experiences and they're all excellent athletes,」 Utah
assistant coach Phil Johnson said. 「I thought it was an excellent workout by
these guys. I just thought they worked very hard. They're all good defenders,
which is unusual.」

For Anderson, a 6-5, 190-pound shooting guard, working out for the Jazz was
an exciting experience.

「It's great. One step closer to hopefully fulfilling my dream,」 Anderson
said. 「And from what I've seen so far, (Salt Lake) looks like a fun city.」

Anderson averaged 12.8 points per game in his senior season with the Huskies.
He shot 44 percent from the floor, including 41 percent from behind the
3-point arc.

「I never met a shot I didn't like,」 he said. 「I made a couple and missed a
couple today, but that's basketball. You've just got to continue to play hard.
」

Anderson isn't really on the national radar as a player who is expected to be
drafted, but he's hoping to change that with workouts during the next month.

「Definitely, just by doing what I do - put the ball in the hole,」 Anderson
said.「I've got a skill that a lot of guys can't do, which is shoot the
basketball, and I think I'd be a great fit. I'd be an asset to whichever team
will give me a chance.」

While Anderson probably won't crack the first round, he could be a
possibility for one of Utah's two second round picks.

Bowman, a 6-8, 219-pound forward, noticed the adjustment that Salt Lake
City's higher altitude requires of players.

「The air's pretty thin and I'm from Los Angeles, so I had to get used to
that,」 he said. 「But I enjoyed it.」

As a player who has been working on being a hard-nosed defender, Bowman likes
the idea of bolstering Utah's defense.

「I like their style,」 Bowman said. 「They get the ball up, they've got a
good point guard, they've got some good forwards, and they're a
defensive-oriented team. I know Coach (Jerry) Sloan, when he played, was
hard-nosed defense and he carries that over to his team.」

Although Bowman has been in the second round of my mock draft for a few
weeks, many scouts and pundits are mixed on his chances of being drafted. But
that just motivates him to work harder during workouts.

「Definitely. I was told not to listen to that stuff, just go out there and
play, so that's what I do,」 bowman said. 「I don't really know that much
about it, but I'm definitely hungry for other reasons besides that.」

Jones, a 6-7, 215-pound swingman, feels the same way.

「That's just their opinion,」 Jones said. 「I respect that, but at the same
time, when you have an agent, and you know what certain teams look for and
what they need, you come out to these work outs and you're not just doing it
for your own good health, and they're not here to waste your time. 「You have
to be professional and show them what your strengths are and put your heart
into it without any excuses. If you know you can make it to the next level,
you shouldn't be worried about the negativity - just stick to the positives.」

As a defensive specialist, Jones also hopes to appeal to Sloan's
defense-minded nature. But he's got a lot of hard work ahead in the next few
weeks, and not just with basketball.

「I have about seven or eight (workouts) lined up for the next couple weeks,」
 he said. 「It's going to be busy, and I'm trying to graduate, also.」

Tarheel senior Noel, a 6-6, 235-pound swingman, is another specialist at
defense, and he's very adept at crashing the boards.

「I try to use my athletic ability to get to the boards,」 Noel said. 「The
other guy's either bigger or smaller than me, so I'll out-quick him or
overpower him.」

During the last season, Noel has been called on to guard top players in every
position, especially in the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference.

「You've got to move your feet,」 Noel said. 「That's the biggest thing, and
once you're on the ball, you've just got to stop them. The game is always
going to need a defender, and the coaches are definitely more amped to put
you in the game when you can stop the ball.」

While all four players have been projected to be anywhere from high second
round to undrafted, Johnson believes that workouts like Thursday's will
definitely help their draft stock increase.

「They'll all be in the mix,」 Johnson said. 「I don't get to watch very many
guys, so I can't judge where they'll be ranked - I'm just looking at athletes.
」
