Revisiting Jazz options for free agent market

With the draft lottery now over and very little changing in the draft
situation for the Utah Jazz, I'm going to turn attention to a more extensive
look at the free agent picture as it begins to develop this summer. With the
Jazz stating that they want to get better shooting and more power inside,
there are already a few good options for them that may be possible with their
mid-level salary cap exception.

I won't break down any small forwards just yet, because I strongly believe
that Utah's top free agent priority should be re-signing Matt Harpring,
which should happen with Utah's Bird exception unless one of the sure title
contenders makes Harpring an offer he can't refuse. That will be something
to continue watching this summer.

Among power forwards, Vladimir Radmanovic has already been named in some
rumors as a prime target for the Jazz this summer. At 6-10, Radmanovic is a
perimeter-oriented big man who can rebound the ball well, which the Jazz
already have in Mehmet Okur. But imagine the Jazz not losing anything when
Okur takes a breather and Radmanovic comes in, or if Radmanovic spells Carlos
Boozer with Okur at the center spot. A player of Radmanovic's caliber would
definitely come in handy, and many teams are expected to try to lure him with
their mid-level salary cap exceptions.

Former University of Utah star Keith Van Horn might be another possibility,
assuming he doesn't come to terms with the Dallas Mavericks to stay with them
next season. Van Horn has been shipped around a lot, but he's been a
contributor everywhere he's been, both with his scoring and rebounding.

The best center that Utah would have a chance at signing would probably still

make in this summer's draft, and it's still possible that he would leave
Portland for the right team. Given his strong rebounding and shotblocking, he
would definitely make Utah a tougher team defensively. Przybilla also has a
good post game on offense, so he doesn't become a liability on that end of
the floor.

Nazr Mohammed, ironically drafted by the Jazz in 1998 before being dealt in a
draft-night trade, has played well alongside Tim Duncan with the San Antonio
Spurs, but he's been largely unimpressive throughout his career. Still, Utah
will probably give him a look with the idea of possibly using his solid
rebounding alongside Boozer or Okur in its frontcourt.

And of course, there is Jarron Collins, who has been dependable for Utah
throughout his career. The Jazz should have enough either with available cap
space or their early Bird or non Bird exception to retain Collins if they
choose to do so.

In the way of shooting guards, I still think that the biggest development
for Utah there would be Gordan Giricek coming back healthy. He has already
decided not to participate in international play with Croatia in order to
continue rehabilitation of his Achilles tendonitis, and there's no question
that when he's 100 percent he can shoot the ball. But there are a couple of
options still remaining to the Jazz if they elect to pursue a shooting guard
in free agency.

Bonzi Wells is probably the top shooting guard in this summer's free agent
market. Playing with the Sacramento Kings during the 2005-06 season, Wells
averaged 13.6 points per game and a career-high 7.7 rebounds per game. Wells
has carried a lot of off-court baggage since his days with the Trail Blazers,
but his strong play this past season may have teams willing to give Wells a
shot.

Ronald "Flip" Murray is another strong free agent possibility on the market.
Murray went from a reserve role with the Seattle Supersonics to become the
Cleveland Cavaliers' starting off-guard, averaging 13.5 points per game in
28 regular-season games with the Cavs. Murray saw that average drop in the
playoffs to 8.1 points per game, but having finished only his fourth NBA
season, he offers the promise of only getting better.

picking him up when the Atlanta Hawks waived him, but Delk opted to go with
Detroit. He's still a sturdy veteran who can give a team 15-20 minutes a
night and be a mentor for younger players.

I don't see Utah going after any of the top point guards on the free agent
market just yet with Deron Williams developing as well as he is and Utah
holding an option year on Keith McLeod. Milt Palacio is also available to
them and has stated that he'd like to return to the Jazz next season. But
that's something that can change as well, so keep watching, and we'll revisit
this in the future as developments continue.
