Prospects leave town with tales to tell

Next week, virtually all of the NBA's top scouts and executives ─ including
Jazz basketball operations senior vice president Kevin O'Connor ─ will
gather in Orlando for the league's annual pre-draft camp.
That in mind, the Jazz used the long Memorial Day weekend to bring a dozen
prospects for the June 28 draft into town for an early and private firsthand
look.
Probably no more than two will wind up with the team come training-camp time
in October. But most left with tidbits and tales to tell, and here are just
a few worth sharing:

Girl talk
Duke shooting guard J.J. Redick was asked what it would be like ─ should
Utah draft him at No. 14 overall ─ to play in the NBA with another Duke
product,Jazz power forward Carlos Boozer.
"I don't know Carlos too well," Redick said. "I was better friends with
Mike Dunleavy, (Jay) Williams out of that class. As you all know, Carlos has
a woman ─ so he spent a lot of time with her when he was in college."
Redick was a high school senior in Virginia during the 2001-02 season, the
last for Boozer, Dunleavy and Williams at Duke before all headed to the NBA.

Hornets fan
Another Duke product the Jazz seem to like is power forward Shelden Williams,
also a high school senior in the 2001-02 season.
He has a different relationship with Boozer than does Redick. Williams,
in fact, said the two remain friends after Boozer showed him around campus
on his official recruiting visit to Duke.
"We stayed close from there," Williams said after working out for the Jazz
last Monday.
Williams was even on hand in his hometown of Oklahoma City to watch Boozer
play when the Jazz were there in April to face the Hornets, who have
temporarily relocated to Oklahoma because Hurricane Katrina struck the
franchise's home in New Orleans.

Witnessing the raucous, soldout game left Williams convinced the NBA and

we could never have any pro team, because everyone is so fixated on those
two (college) teams," he said. "But the way the whole state has embraced
(the Hornets) has been wonderful. Hopefully they can keep the team."
After he auditioned in Utah, by the way, Williams showed his stuff for
the Hornets, who pick at No. 12 overall, two spots ahead of the Jazz.

Classic quote
Villanova shooting guard Randy Foye, a possible Jazz pick if he isn't already
off the board when it is Utah's turn at 14, thinks he knows what type of
player Jazz coach Jerry Sloan likes.
How?
"From watching (ESPN) Classic Sports, how he played for the Bulls, diving on
the floor and everything," said Foye, who still was more than five years away
from being born when in 1978 Sloan ended his NBA playing career with Chicago.

Lofty standards
One Web site, nbadraft.net, uses ex-Jazz guard Jeff Hornacek ─ whose
retired uniform number hangs in the Delta Center rafters ─ as its so-called
"NBA comparison" for West Virginia product Mike Gansey.
"That's very, very high standards," said Gansey, who worked out Tuesday
for the Jazz. "You know Jeff Hornacek is one of the best players ever to
play in Utah, and one of the better players ever in the NBA.
"Just to be compared to him is very, very special ─ and I've got a long,
long way to be as good as he ever was."
The gritty Gansey hangs his hat on scrappy play, but ─ a la Hornacek ─
looks more like an accountant than an NBA shooting guard.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie
Australian swingman Brad Newley ─ who auditioned in Utah on Tuesday along
with Redick, Foye and Gansey ─ was a junior national-team teammate with a
much higher-profile Aussie, University of Utah product Andrew Bogut.
But it seems Bogut ─ selected No. 1 overall in last year's draft by the
Milwaukee Bucks ─ is doing his part to help make his mate a little more
well known in the United States.
"He gives me a few mentions every now and then," Newley said. "I might pay
him on the side for that ─ but he doesn't need the money."
