Rocky Mountain Revue'd
After hanging out at SLCC for a couple of days, here are my initial thoughts
a third of the way through the summer league games:
1. Deron Williams doesn't belong in the summer league anymore.
This is fairly obvious to anyone who has seen him perform head and shoulders
above the competition. He did have his struggles in the 4th quarter of
Saturday's loss to the Sixers but he earned his trip back home with his overall
play. Deron led the team in scoring and assists and shot 69% from the field in
his two games. Enjoy the rest of your summer.
2. Paul Millsap and Dee Brown will make the team.
Millsap leads the team in rebounding. Jazz Director of Player Personnel
Walt Perrin told me that if there's one stat that translates from college to
the NBA, it's rebounding. As most fans know, Millsap was the first college
player to lead the nation in rebounding for three straight years. But if it's
so obvious, why did everyone pass on him until the 17th pick of the 2nd round?
His height? Why should that matter if rebounding translates regardless?
Instead of trying to understand the shortcomings of other NBA personnel
departments in this year's draft, let's just say the Jazz got a steal.
As for Dee Brown, he's had his up's and down's in the first two games, but
he'll provide all of the qualities off the bench that we saw him provide in
a starring role at Illinois.
3. Ronnie Brewer is going to have an instant impact.
The biggest reason? He truly believes he has to make his mark on this team
without the ball in his hands. He's not just paying lip service to that idea.
Look for him to focus on rebounding and locking down his man over the next
four games. Although with Deron gone, you can also expect him to score more
by default.
4. CJ Miles is better but…
unless Gordan Giricek gets dealt; Miles is still on the wrong end of the
minutes battle with all of the other perimeter players that will demand
court time in the fall. The guy has a future in the NBA as a shooting guard
but his time to shine in the regular season is still a year or two away.
5. Araujo will be fun to watch.
For the same reason I loved watching Greg Kite in Orlando about 15 years ago,
Jazz fans will love watching Haffa. There will be many battles down low at
the Delta Center. I'm personally waiting for Araujo v. Fortson. Plus, he has
one of the top five greatest laughs of all time. I’m thinking about making
it my ringtone.
6. Robert Whaley is the early leader for spot #14.
This is really just because he's the incumbent at the moment. Before the Revue
began I predicted that the 14th roster spot would come down to Whaley or
Roger Powell. Powell hasn't done a lot to stand out yet. (Neither really has
Whaley). But based on team seniority, I think Powell has to unseat Whaley for
the spot. A tie would go to the Big Whale. This assumes several things: both
second round picks make the roster, the Jazz stick to the idea of carrying 14
players into the regular season instead of 15 like last year, and Whaley's son
doesn't stab him outside a Park City bar. Let's hope Whaley Junior has learned
his lesson.
7. The Jazz have dodged bad karma.
The J.J. Redick issue was resolved for the Jazz when he was drafted before
they could grab him. Now his bad back has him out of action for summer league
ball and the U.S. national team. I interviewed Rodney Carney the other night
during the Sixers game. He was perhaps the other option if the Jazz decided not
to draft Brewer. He's out of action right now with a… wait for it… wait for
it… a tweaked hamstring! We're all well acquainted with the physiology of
the hamstring muscle after last season. By the way, this hamstring injury
could be healed by Tuesday. At least that's what Carney told me.
Check back in over the next few days. I'll have more thoughts as the week at
the RMR progresses.
