Jazz: Who will play? Who will sit?

Jazz fans, the Rocky Mountain Revue is in the rear view mirror and it is time
to look into the fall. We have two game we can play either "who will be on
the roster?" or "who will be in the rotation?" Personally, I am not all that
fascinated with who is sitting behind the bench in street clothes. Let's stick
to the guys who will play and either win or lose games.
Since the Boozer trade I expected seems less and less likely with every
passing day, I think a lot of Jerry Sloan’s rotation is pretty obvious.
Andrei Kirilenko: A.K. figures to play 35-40 minutes a night. A brilliant
call by me. If your team is 38-31 when you are in the line-up and 3-10 when
you don't play, your job is safe. The only questions are, "how many nights
will A.K. be healthy?" and did he "work on the jumper" for Masha like she
asked him to on Talkin’ Sports. His allowance may depend on it.
Carlos Boozer: Same question different guy, how many nights will Carlos play?
The difference is the Jazz were one game under .500 when Boozer sat out and a
game over .500 when he played. I believe his agent has shopped him and Boozer
now knows how much damage his Cleveland exit and his protracted stay in street
clothes have done to his reputation league-wide. I think he will average 35-40
minutes a game and play 75 contests. His low post scoring gives the offense an
added threat and Boozer can definitely rebound, but defensively he is a
liability.
Mehmet Okur: Defensively he is a liability. Isn't it great the way we can
effortlessly transition between players? Okur can rebound, score and play all
82 games. He can make three pointers and free throws late in games, but defense
is not a strong point. The problem with Boozer and Okur is they are so similar.
If either guy was paired with a shot blocking center, you wouldn't notice
nearly as much, but quick perimeter players see Okur and Boozer together and
they go flying for the rim. I'm not sure what the Jazz are planning on doing
about that, other than make sure A.K. is on the floor every time Boozer and
Okur are playing together. Okur will also play 35-40 minutes.
Matt Harpring: Last year there was a stretch where he couldn't play in
back-to-back games and he couldn't play 30 minutes a night. Why did the Jazz
re-sign a guy with two micro-fracture knee surgeries?
Because Jerry Sloan
thinks the Jazz lack toughness and Harpring is the toughest guy on the roster.
He can hit jumpers, make a flex cut for an easy lay-up, rebound, defend, and
swing between the two and three depending on where the Jazz need to use
Kirilenko's versatility. Matt will be good for 30 minutes a night.
Deron Williams: He finished his rookie year on a roll.
Jerry Sloan was very
complimentary this summer. When I asked Jerry why, he said
"because he has
done everything we have asked him to". That is high praise from a guy who
was willing to sit Williams for a long stretch in the middle of last season.
Of course Jerry could do it again because he has Derek Fisher. But he won't.
Williams will play 35 minutes a night.
Derek Fisher: He was unhappy in Golden State because he was stuck behind
Baron Davis and Jason Richardson. He wanted a buyout, but instead was traded
to Utah where he figured he would watch Deron Williams play.
Kevin O'Connor
flew out to California and set Fisher's mind at ease. Well, how did he do that?
Maybe he pointed out how many games Kirilenko, Boozer and Harpring missed last
year, how many minutes would be available for a guy who shoots 43% from behind
the three-point line playoff games and Jerry's willingness to play guys
"out of position". Sloan played the five best guys on the team at the end of
the season, regardless of position. Boozer and Okur are power forwards.
Kirilenko and Harpring are small forwards and Williams is a point. Why wouldn't
Jerry play a couple of point guards together? Both Williams and Fisher can
shoot the three-pointer and spread the floor. Williams is big enough to defend
some two guards. Fisher will play at least 25 minutes a game and maybe more,
the question is who join Okur, Boozer, AK and Williams on the floor at the end
of the game, Harpring or Fisher? I can't read Jerry's mind yet, maybe because
it isn't made up, but Fish will play 30 minutes.
Ronnie Brewer: The rookie looked good during the Rocky Mountain Revue. That
doesn't mean he can play in the regular season, but you know if he doesn't
look good in summer league, he won’t play in the regular season. Ronnie Brewer
has a chance to earn 10-15 minutes each night, but so does…
C.J. Miles: Like Williams,
Jerry Sloan was also very complimentary of Miles
this summer. I figure both Brewer and Miles get their shots. When one
struggles, he goes to the end of the bench and the other guy moves into the
rotation. In the late 90's Sloan used to rest Stockton, Malone and Hornacek
at the same time and chance the pace of the game by inserting Bryon Russell,
Shandon Anderson and Howard Eisley. I think Sloan will eventually toy with
Kirilenko, Brewer, Miles and Williams and either Okur or Boozer.
Jarron Collins: Jerry Sloan always says guaranteed contracts don't equal
guaranteed playing time and he has sat guys making good money, but the Jazz
didn't re-sign Collins so they could bench him. He'll play 20 minutes a night
because…
Rafael Araujo: Hoffa is going to foul out in 10 minutes. The former Cougar
didn't look good in the Rocky Mountain Revue and if you don’t look good
against free agents how are you going to look good against NBA guys. Plus, he
had no problem getting in foul trouble with a bunch of unknowns, what will
happen when an NBA star drives the lane and Araujo breathes on him.
Paul Millsap: Unfortunately for Millsap he is a power forward on a team with
two established power forwards. But he rebounded in college, and he rebounded
in the revue and as long as you can average a rebound every three and a half
minutes you will have a spot on an NBA roster, but probably not in the
regular rotation.
Dee Brown: I like Dee Brown. I think he will make the team and one day he'll
contribute, but the year he sits behind the bench for awhile and then plays
in the NBDL. C.J. Miles can tell him what to expect.
