Looking back on Jazz summer moves Thursday, September 7, 2006 3:03 PM CDT Chuck Nunn/Jazz Session This is the first chance I've had to take a solid breath since taking over full sports editor duties for the South Idaho Press, which is just as well, as all has been quiet on the Utah Jazz offseason front for some time. Almost too quiet. Still, I think that there is plenty of reason for optimism about the moves the Jazz have made this summer, especially their new additions on draft night this past June. When I was doing mock drafts at the beginning of the year, I only briefly thought that former Arkansas Razorback Ronnie Brewer would be available to Utah at No. 14 overall. But when his name was called, I was pretty excited. Brewer brings the Jazz a great deal of athleticism, which he can put to work on both sides of the ball. On offense Brewer runs the floor on the break and gets to the rim with dribble penetration. And his unorthodox jump shot may look odd, but he sinks it with great regularity. Defensively, Brewer can be the backcourt stopper Utah hasn't had in some time. At 6-7, his size for a guard is excellent, and his quickness, athleticism and long arms pay off for him in getting steals and keeping opponents in front of him. Brewer is also capable of playing either guard spot or the small forward position, which gives Utah a lot of lineup options to choose from. In Dee Brown, while it may appear the Jazz picked up a shooting guard in a point guard's body, they actually have a quick, speedy guard who can push the ball in transition. Given a little more familiarity with Utah's system, he'll be an asset down the line, possibly even this season. Plus, Brown can shoot the ball, which would especially come in handy in Jerry Sloan's offense, designed to create open shots all over the floor. Paul Millsap may be the most intruiging pick Utah made in the NBA Draft. The first thing that stands out about him is his rebounding. It's no small feat to lead the nation in rebounding for three straight seasons at the D-I level. And while the Western Athletic Conference isn't the Big East or the Atlantic Coast Conference, Millsap did compete against quality big men in many of Louisiana Tech's games. Which leads me to what Millsap is less noted for. With all the talk about his rebounding, people may forget that this guy can score in the paint. Millsap can very possibly develop into a player similar to the L.A. Clippers' Elton Brand, who like Millsap stands at 6-8 and is considered an undersized power forward. Significant trades have also boosted Utah's roster for the better. The addition of guard Derek Fisher from the Golden State Warriors just gives the Jazz more options in the backcourt. Fisher is a fast point guard who can really push the ball, and he has a reputation for hitting big shots, especially in the playoffs, which is no doubt what Utah had in mind in making the trade. In what could become the sleeper trade of the summer, the Jazz acquired former BYU center Rafael Araujo. The 6-11 Brazilian spent a disappointing two seasons with the Toronto Raptors, but he has the opportunity with Utah to get a fresh start. Araujo seems to be making some strides in that direction, as he has lost weight and gained a little more quickness in offseason workouts. After a slow start during the 2006 Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue, Araujo settled down and put together some nice games to finish summer league play. With fall training camp set to begin Oct. 3 in Boise, the Jazz will soon release their fall camp roster, which may hold a small surprise or two, as the team still wants to get more size and length on the roster. I can hardly stand the suspense.
