FAREWELL #00 By David J. Smith for HOOPSWORLD.com Apr 23, 2006, 22:34 Greg Ostertag always had and always will have his detractors. At the close of his 11-year career, 10 of which were spent with the Utah Jazz, the local Utah reporters and fans have had a field day lambasting the oft-maligned center upon his retirement. While the focus has been on his faults ─ namely his bad hands, clashes with Jerry Sloan, and frustratingly inconsistent play ─ Ostertag had many positives that seem to be largely overlooked. For the most part, he fulfilled his role as the frontcourt defender Utah desperately needed since the days of Mark Eaton. He had a knack for a timely swat, often erasing his teammates' mistakes. He managed to frustrate Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O'Neal in some crucial Playoff matches. As a rebounder, he had his moments where he used his length to clear the glass. He was always an underrated passer, particularly his outlet passing. Sure, he was up and down. He was grossly overpaid. He sometimes came into camp out of shape. But then again, what center hasn't been guilty of one or more of the aforementioned? On his good days, Ostertag was the x-factor that resulted in Jazz victories. What more could be expected from a late first-round pick? Off the court, Ostertag was a fine example to the community. His donating his kidney to save his sister’s life was the epitome of selflessness and left even the biggest complainers respecting this sacrifice. So long Greg. For many Jazz fans, you will be missed. Last Updated: Jul 30th, 2006 - 07:40:57 http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_17090.shtml -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 59.41.174.205
