Sloan considering a team captain change By Phil Miller The Salt Lake Tribune Article Last Updated:10/25/2006 01:53:55 AM MDT Jazz Notes DENVER - Lots of decisions will be made in the next week about Jazz players - who makes the team, whose contract gets renewed - but Jerry Sloan is wrestling with another call that seems minor, but might not be. The Jazz coach remains undecided about who to name the team's captain. That might seem strange, given that all three of last season's captains remain on the roster, but Sloan is considering making a change. "We're still talking about it, the coaches and I," Sloan said. "I've given it some thought." Andrei Kirilenko, Carlos Boozer and Matt Harpring served last season as tri-captains, a job with responsibilities that include meeting with the referees before the game, approaching the officials should any problems arise, and - most nebulous of all - acting as a sort of locker-room leader. "It's hard job for me. Sometimes I don't know what to do," Kirilenko said. "In Russia, it's more like coaching role in the floor. Here, it's like you should be spiritual leader." Should Sloan decide to appoint a different captain, or set of captains, removing the title without hurting anyone's feelings might be a delicate matter. But all three said they would have no problem accepting the coach's decision. "The great thing about Jerry is, he'll do what's best for the team. I don't think it would bother anybody," Boozer said. "I loved it. It makes you more responsible, so it would be an honor again. But whatever he decides is what's best." "I've tried to do it to the best of my ability, but I'd be happy either way," Harpring added. Kirilenko said the lack of a concrete job description bothered him last year. "I mean, main job is to go to center court and shake somebody's hand," he said. The locker-room aspects, the unspoken assumption that he would confront teammates who weren't meeting expectations? Much more difficult. "I don't like to talk a lot, and English is not my native language. So sometimes it's hard for me to inspire," Kirilenko said. "All I can say is, 'Pick it up guys.' . . . I mean, sometimes there are games, games, all the time, and you can see guys are tired. I cannot do anything about that." He does consider the role an honor though, and looks upon himself as one of the Jazz's central players. "I'm captain until somebody tells me I'm not," he said. But if Sloan named, say, Derek Fisher or Deron Williams instead? "I wouldn't be upset. If he chose somebody who would really talk with the players and be a kind of leader, I would personally agree and support that guy." Briefly Brown and Brian Chase will continue their battle for a spot on the Jazz for at least one more game. Sloan said he would make no cuts until after the Jazz's preseason finale, Thursday night against the Pacers. "Both guys are pretty equal the way they've played," Sloan evaluated. "Both have had moments where they've struggled a little bit, too. That's OK, it's part of being young players." Fisher will return to practice today, after missing 11 days with a badly bruised pelvis. "I'm really looking forward to getting him back in our workouts," Sloan said. pmiller@sltrib.com http://www.sltrib.com/jazz/ci_4546127 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 59.41.44.20
