After he learned he was going to start his first NBA game on Wednesday,
C.J. Miles was so giddy he could barely talk.
Fortunately, he could still shoot.
Miles made his first four shots, got his hand on the opening tip and
blocked 7-foot-2 Dikembe Mutombo to lead a tongue-wagging charge that saw
the Jazz build an 11-point lead in the first quarter.
"It was a big thing," Miles said. "Coach [Jerry Sloan] gave me an
opportunity to start on opening night and I didn't want to let him down.
I didn't think I'd be starting in the NBA at the age of 19."
Miles compared the experience to a dream, and appropriately he seemed to
slip into a deep slumber in the second half. He only played eight minutes,
in the third quarter, and let the ball get away from him twice.
The biggest lesson he learned from opening night came in that slump, as
he realized he needs to play with the same intensity throughout the game.
"When the first ball dropped out of my hand, I got the second and was
like, 'Don't drop this one,' and I did," Miles said. "I was trying to snap
out of it, but by the time I was snapping out of it, coach was like, 'Come
sit by me.' I kind of knew."
The dropoff in the second half bothered Miles, but it wasn't enough to
dampen the excitement of his first start.
One of the first people he told was his father, Calvin, when he picked
him up at the airport. His dad didn't quite share in the excitement.
"He was just like, 'OK,' " Miles said. "I could dribble the ball through
my legs twice and dunk it and he still wouldn't be excited."
Miles, who originally committed to Texas before entering the draft, spent
part of his rookie year in Albuquerque in the NBA Developmental League.
Getting sent south wouldn't have been his first choice, but looking back on
it now, he said it was the best thing to prepare him.
"It felt like I was kind of in between," he said. "I was still part of
the team, and especially the young guys are real tight and I talked to them
a lot. But I don't think without going to the D-League I'd be the player I
am today because I got some experience."
Now that he knows he is good enough to start, Miles also knows what he has
to do to stay in the game. As he said, he is still on a learning curve, but
he and the Jazz coaching staff like what he showed in those first minutes.
"There is no question he can shoot," Sloan said. "He came out in the
second half and didn't have the energy. If he is going to be a man in this
league, he's going to have to get in better shape and finish it up."
