Sloan likes tough play, but he still wants more

SACRAMENTO — His wrists are both bruised. His hips hurt,
and so does an elbow.
It's little wonder Jazz starting point guard Deron Williams
— one of those on a league-leading 10-1 team noticeably
playing a heckuva lot more physical than in recent seasons
past — sat out practice Tuesday.
Williams — who vowed he'll play tonight in Sacramento —
along with rookie Paul Millsap and at least a few other
regulars have exhibited a hard-nosed style coach Jerry
Sloan preaches, praises and proposes could potentially
pay huge dividends.
Yet for Sloan, his club preparing for a stretch with six
games in nine nights beginning this evening, it's not
nearly enough.
"Some guys, strictly they look at the game at an offensive
standpoint," he said, not naming — but likely referencing
— starting power forward Carlos Boozer and starting center
Mehmet Okur. "Our big people have got to learn to help better
(defensively).
"(Millsap) really sticks out like a sore thumb," Sloan added,
"when he gives help. Our other people can do the same thing,
and that's what we need if we're gonna be
good enough to play against the really elite teams night in
and night out."
Sloan truly believes the Jazz — off to their best-ever 11-game
start — have that
capability.
"This team can be as good they want to be," he said. "If they
want to do it individually, they won't be very good."
His contention:
Even while Boozer and Okur collect points and rebounds like
loose change and pocket lint, there is more hard work to be
done.
All Jazz players, make no mistake, seem to be playing with
much more passion than last year.
"I think we're a lot tougher," Williams said, "mentally and
physically."
And they don't apologize for it.
"We don't plan to go out and beat teams up, but that's just
the way we play," veteran guard Derek Fisher said. "It's the
way Coach teaches us to play. It's the way we practice.
"The offense we run is (physical)," Fisher added. "It involves
a lot of cutting and moving, and guys screening for each other."
That traditional style, not to mention the Jazz's record and
their 107.6 points-per-game average this season, has drawn
notice.

在季初的這十一場比賽後，Sloan 完全相信他的隊伍
有能力做到這一點。
他繼續說道’當 Boozer和Okur 在場上恣意的得分和

相較於去年，所有爵士球員都盡量減少在場上犯錯，
並對比賽投入更多的熱情。”

的捍衛禁區，但我認為我們的確是需要提升禁區的防
守能力。”
“如果犯規可以阻止你們這些傢伙得分，那我絕對會
狠狠的犯上這一規”
也就是說，像在季後賽一樣的堅壁清野防守方式。
這位曾經在洛杉磯湖人隊拿過三枚冠軍戒指的人說道 :
”在季後賽的肢體碰撞總是比季賽時強烈的多，因此
有人會認為我們把季賽當季後賽一樣在打，或是把一
般比賽當作比數接近的比賽在拼命。”
至少球隊中有些人的確是這麼想，其中一個是 Millsap。
“我很久沒看到人像他這樣拼命的比賽”Sloan 說道：
“他的表現的確對我們球隊有非常大的作用，也許我們
去年不如今年般的有自信，但是當你可以忍受這些激烈
的肢體碰撞之後，也許你的努力會給你帶來更大的自信
心”
“這是精神上的作用，今年我們想贏的更多，我們非常
渴望能進入季後賽”Williams 補充道。
Sloan 知道要進入季後賽需要些什麼，這也是為什麼他
對球隊的要求這麼高，他沒有指名道姓的講，但是我們
都知道他在講那個人。
“John Stockton 在球場上十八年從來沒有錯過任何一
次練習，雖然他經驗已經豐富到我不要他參與練球，如
果他受了些輕傷，他仍然會持續不斷的練習，這反而會
使得他覺得好過的多”
“如果一個球員摔斷了腿打折了手指那他當然不該參與
練習，但是如果只是淤青和擦傷，聯盟裡頭那個球員不
是這樣？你必須學著接受這些疼痛，在精神上武裝起來，
隨時準備好參加每一場比賽，這總比以後你去惋惜錯過
了什麼比賽好的多，我可不是特別在說誰”
