Lakers: Facing the Music

The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday
night.  It was the Lakers fourth victory in a row, improving their
record to 8-3.  After Wednesday night's games, the Lakers stand with
the third best record in the NBA.  Only the Utah Jazz (11-1) and San
Antonio Spurs (10-2) have a higher winning percentage.

The Lakers have four games remaining in November.  The next should
be the most challenging yet; a visit to Utah.  The Jazz have won
seven straight and are flat out dominating the league.  Perhaps most
impressive was Wednesday's victory over the Kings in Sacramento when
the Jazz overcame a 21 point lead to win by nine.  The scoring in the
fourth quarter . . . 39 Jazz, 17 Kings.

Utah hasn't been padding their record either with easy teams.  They'd
beaten the Phoenix Suns twice, the Houston Rockets, Golden State
Warriors, Detroit Pistons and Clippers to name a few.  The Western
Conference has been remarkably stronger than the East, but the Jazz
have a perfect 7-0 record in the West.

They've also been effective on the road, winning five of six.  Their
lone loss was to the New Jersey Nets who took advantage of the Jazz
propensity to pick up personal fouls.  Both Vince Carter and Richard
Jefferson feasted at the line with 12 and 14 free throws apiece,
respectively.  Take away the points earned at the stripe and the Jazz
had better numbers in nearly every area.

Utah are among the league leaders in category after category including
points, field goal percentage (over 50% as a team), three-point
percentage, assists and rebounds.

In the standings, the Lakers are just 2 1/2 games behind the Jazz.
They'll need to bring their complete game to get the upset in Utah.
LA has been winning games but with somewhat uneven performances.
They'll need to make a concerted effort to attack the basket and
put the Jazz into foul trouble, one of Utah's few weaknesses.
Unfortunately free throw shooting hasn't been a Laker strength.
Getting to the line and converting could be the difference.

The two will rematch on the 30th in LA.  The Jazz will be on the second
night of a back-to-back after hosting the San Antonio Spurs on the 29th.
The Lakers should be able to take advantage of Utah's tired legs,
however the Jazz are already perfect 6-0 winning all three pairs of
their back-to-backs.

The two remaining in November are in LA against the New Jersey Nets
and Milwaukee Bucks.  Both are under .500 and have losing records on
the road.  Both teams are very competitive; the Nets tend to have big
games at Staples Center and the Bucks can put up a ton of points.
If the Lakers aren't sharp against either, a letdown is certainly possible.
A perfect finish would put the Lakers at 12-3 for November, a needed
fast start considering how road heavy the rest of the year is.  For
as many games as the Lakers have won in the early going, they've only
played three on the road (1-2).  If the Lakers can get 30 at home and
play .500 on the road they'll hit the 50-win mark.

Considering Utah faces the Spurs once before December (along with two
theoretical losses to the Lakers), it's possible that LA could end up
with the best record in the NBA by month's end.  Of course that counts
on the Spurs dropping one of their four remaining against the Dallas
Mavericks, Seattle SuperSonics, Golden State Warriors and Jazz.

Should the Lakers stumble, at worst they'll finish with a winning
record (8-7).  December does have a home-heavy start for the first five
(one visit to the Clippers), but the schedule immediately becomes more
challenging with eight of the next 10 on the road.

The Bottom Line
It may be too much to expect the Lakers to win out the month.  Friday
in particular will be very challenging.

The Jazz are a legitimate team.  Last year they fielded a competitive
roster, but injuries derailed their playoff run early on.  Now that
they're healthy (Andrei Kirilenko has been out, but is expected back
Friday), they're looking to lock up the Northwest Division early.

The Lakers have also shown that they are an improved team.  Their
triangle execution has led to easy baskets and a high shooting percentage.
For Luke Walton to be leading the league with a 71.4% three-point
percentage, the offense MUST be working.

LA may not have been accurately tested with such a home heavy schedule.
Friday night is the perfect opportunity to establish that they too are
for real.


要湖人隊在這個月全勝有點過頭了，星期五晚上的這場比賽會是
非常大的挑戰。

爵士隊是一個富有傳統的球隊，去年他們透過選秀選到了很有競
爭性的球員，但是傷兵困擾使得他們無法進入季後賽，但是如今
他們有了完整而健康的陣容，（雖然AK又掛了，但是星期五應該
可以上場），他們可是西北組的熱門隊伍。

湖人隊需要表現出他們已非吳下阿蒙，他們的三角戰術使得分變
得更為容易而有效率，其中 Luke Walton甚至是全聯盟三分命中
率最高的（71.4％），湖人隊的進攻必須要取得效果。

湖人隊的賽程到目前還算輕鬆，因此星期五的比賽是證明他們自
己的最好機會。
