Home or road, black shoes or white, no change is big enough to shake
the Jazz's winning streak. They have won with Andrei Kirilenko and
without, by taking big leads and falling way behind. They've worn
light blue, dark blue and white uniforms, dominated in the paint
and hit three-pointers, practiced in the the Delta Center and played
in EnergySolutions Arena, all in the same day - and still won, won,
won.
"No stopping us when we play like this," Deron Williams said the
other day, and at 11-1, it's getting rather difficult to argue
with him. "We don't even think about all [the changes]."
Maybe not, but he might notice the next change. Because it could
come in the starting backcourt.
Kirilenko, his sprained right ankle now pain-free, will likely return
to the Jazz lineup tonight when the Jazz face the Lakers , though
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan hasn't decided how to use the lanky forward yet.
"I'll have to see Andrei play," Sloan said. "Maybe he's better coming
off the bench. I don't know where he's at right now."
Eventually, though, Kirilenko figures to reclaim his starting role.
When the time comes, the simplest move would be to return Ronnie Brewer
to his reserve role. But the rookie has made obvious strides since
becoming a starter, averaging 9.2 points in those five games.
"His energy level seems to be pretty high right now," Sloan said. "He
seems to want to work hard in practice, and that's important. [The
extra playing time] has helped him, I think so."
Which raises the possibility of leaving Brewer in the starting lineup,
But simply shifting him into the backcourt alongside Williams. "He
can do it. The positions are basically the same," said Sloan, though
the coach would not betray any hints about his lineup plans.
But as C.J. Miles would be the first to admit, the Jazz are off to
their best start ever with only four starters making a reliable impact.
Sloan
Miles responded brilliantly to Sloan's surprise decision to make him
the starting off-guard, hitting four of five shots on opening night,
and scoring 17 points in the season's third game. But he has managed
just 19 in the nine games since. Miles opened the season by making 11
of his first 20 shots, but he is 9-for-40, and 0-for-9 from three-point
range, in the meantime. His second-year shooting percentage of 33.3
percent has now slipped below his rookie-season showing of 36.8.
And worst of all?
"That's not the problem," Sloan said.
The Jazz can obviously thrive without points from Miles, as the best
record in the NBA demonstrates. But the coach is concerned that Miles
is becoming distracted by his shooting problems. By all accounts,
Miles is among the deadliest shooters in practice, but has yet to
prove it regularly during games.
And lately, Sloan said, "he has a tendency to let that interfere with
the other parts of basketball. There's a lot more going on out
there than just shooting the ball."
He's talking about defense, mostly. Like allowing Kevin Martin to
shoot 6-for-7 while Miles was on him Wednesday in Sacramento. Or
not registering a steal in his last three games.
"He's got to learn how to play without [thinking], 'Am I getting
shots?' " Sloan said. "If he makes them, he seems to be OK. If he
misses them, he's still got to play. So he's got to learn how to
play through that."
Kevin
Martin
Miles disputes not one word of his coach's analysis.
"I've been so hard on myself, because I'm my worst critic, that
I start to get tight out there, getting nervous about everything,
" the second-year guard said. "The last two games, I've definitely
been doing that to myself. My shot hasn't been falling and I've
been putting so much pressure on myself."
His minutes have dwindled as a result; Miles hasn't played more
than 16 minutes in the past four games. But the 19-year-old pro
intends to change his approach to whatever minutes he gets this
weekend.
"I've been down on myself so much, sometimes I've been passing
up shots I can hit if I just shoot the ball. When I was making
shots, I wasn't thinking about it," Miles said. "So now I'm just
going to play basketball, try to get some of the easy stuff. Just
try to crash the boards, try to get a steal or two, do some of
the stuff that'll get me going."
It's just like the Jazz's recent pattern of falling behind, then
coming roaring back. Miles remains confident that the rally is
at hand. "I'll come back around, don't worry," he said. "I've been
in slumps before."
I’ll be back!
