Okur has double-take on ankle roll

   Jazz notes Mehmet Okur's ankle was throbbing in pain Monday night,
so he hobbled straight across the court, past Utah's bench and down
the tunnel toward the locker room.

   But he stopped halfway there, when he spotted a television screen
showing a replay of the tangle that had twisted that ankle. Okur
limped over to the TV and stopped. Treatment could wait a few seconds.
   "I wanted to see it. I wanted to watch how it happened," the Turk
said. "It looked pretty bad."

   He watched as he descended under the Mavericks' basket and landed
on DJ Mbenga's large foot, twisting his right foot awkwardly.
Satisfied that the pain was real, Okur finally made it into the
trainer's room.

   But the Jazz's center said he felt good on Tuesday. His ankle was
heavily taped, but he shot around before the Jazz's practice and said,
"It feels only a little pain." Okur sat out of practice, just as a
precaution, but intends to play tonight against the Clippers
(8:30 p.m., FSN Utah).

   That will keep alive his consecutive-game streak, which reached 201
on Monday. It's the seventh-longest current streak in the league. Okur
has another streak on the line tonight, too: He has led the Jazz in
scoring in four straight games against the Clippers.

   No thanks

   Jazz coach Jerry Sloan cleared his bench with a
25-point lead and 2:54 remaining on Monday, sending in rookies
Dee Brown, Ronnie Brewer and Paul Millsap and second-year player
C.J. Miles.

   But he didn't use everyone. Sloan walked to the end of the bench,
where Gordan Giricek had sat the entire night.

   "I just gave him a choice. I said, 'It's up to you if you want to
play. I don't want to embarrass you,' ” Sloan said of the veteran
guard, who has played only 15 minutes in the past four games, and not
at all in the last two. "He chose not to go in the ballgame."

   Which was OK with the coach, who asked Giricek out of respect.
"It's not like I said, 'Go in the game,' and he turned me down,"
Sloan said. "I understand that."

   Giricek is still being cautious with his tender right Achilles',
and he kept it wrapped with an ice bag during most of the victory over
the Mavs. He is available to play, but has lost his spot in the
rotation for the moment to Brown and veteran Derek Fisher.

   Briefly

   The Jazz outshot Dallas 48.1 percent to 37.3 on Monday, the 17th
time this season they have made more of their shots than their
opponents. They are 15-2 when making at least 45 percent, and 11-0 if
they hit half their shots. Utah's 48.5 percent success rate - a huge
improvement over last year's 44.2 - ranks second in the league, behind
only Phoenix. . . . The Jazz are now 11-3 against the Western
Conference, considered by far the more difficult of the two this season.
But Utah is 3-2 against the East.
