NBA players hope return of old ball is just first step

LOS ANGELES — The president of the NBA Players Association hopes commissioner
David Stern's decision that the league will return to using its traditional
leather ball is just the first step in a better working relationship between
Stern, team owners and the union.

"I think the only way to do that," Jazz guard Derek Fisher said, "is for us all
to come up with a way to be able to sit in the same room, and make decisions
that both players and owners feel are best for the game — not just one side or
the other."

Fisher lauds Stem for listening to player complaints about a new synthetic ball
that was introduced at the start of this season — with no pre-approval from
the union — and for deciding earlier this week that the leather ball will be
back in play beginning Jan. 1.

Now, Fisher said, "maybe we can move on to some bigger and more-important
issues."

The players union also is upset with new rules cracking down on excessive
player complaints to referees — what it calls the league's new "no-tolerance"
policy.

現在，會長說道，"或許我們可以針對一些更大、更重要的議題進行更進一步的協商。"

球員工會也對禁止球員在裁判鳴哨後有其他任何質疑或抱怨的行為的新規則很感冒 — 聯
盟稱之為「零容忍」的新政策。


Beyond specific issues, though, players simply want a louder voice in decisions
before they're made, sans consultation, by the commissioner and the league's
board of governors.

The ball fight is symbolic of that.

And while Fisher understands that it probably will be only a matter of time
before the leather ball is replaced yet again — manufacturer Spalding and the
league have made it known they're already planning on further testing — he
also hopes that this time players will have more of a say before the switch is
made.

"We would like to think the people that are going to be using that," Fisher
said, "are going to get an opportunity to try it out before you say, 'This is
the one.' "

DUNLEAVY EXTENDED: The Clippers signed head coach Mike Dunleavy to a contract
extension before Wednesday's game against the Jazz.

Terms of the deal were not announced, but ESPN The Magazine's Rick Bucher
reported that the contract is for five years starting next season and worth in
excess of $25 million.

"Mike has already experienced a lot of success with the Clippers," Clippers
basketball boss Elgin Baylor said in a statement, "and there is no doubt in my
mind that he is the right person to continue to lead the team in the future."

Dunleavy — who also has coached the Lakers, Bucks and Portland — had a
122-144 career record with the Clippers before facing Utah on Wednesday.

MISC.: Ex-BYU center Rafael Araujo and rookie Roger Powell Jr. again were
inactive for the Jazz on Wednesday. Neither has played in the last three weeks.
... Point guard Brian Chase who, before being waived, spent the early part of
the season on the Jazz's inactive list, was expected to attend Wednesday's game
. Chase plays now for the D-League's Los Angeles Avengers. ... The Jazz have
not discussed sending anyone to their D-League affiliate, the Idaho Stampede,
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said Wednesday
