Paul Millsap
The 21-year-old forward grew up in Denver and Grambling, La., and
attended Louisiana Tech. He has two daughters who live in Louisiana.
What would you be doing if you weren't playing basketball?
I'd probably be trying to play football. I played in middle school when
I lived in Colorado. I was a quarterback. I was 6-foot-3 in seventh grade,
and I was pretty good. I really liked football. . . . But when I moved to
Louisiana, it was a basketball town, so I concentrated on that.
When did you realize you could play professionally?
My first year in college, I wasn't sure I was good enough. But I had a
really good sophomore year, and after that, I decided, maybe I can play. I
guess I changed my mentality, tried to prepare myself. I tried to stick with
what I did well - rebounding the basketball. My whole family, aunts, uncles,
everybody told me I could make it. When you've got everybody behind you,
you've got to go for it.
You played at Karl Malone's alma mater. Did you meet him?
You hear a lot about him, he's definitely still real popular there. I
never got to meet him, but he's sent word, telling me he's heard good things,
telling me to keep my head up and work hard. That's how we communicate.
