The Most Surprising Players Of The 2006-2007 Season
19th December, 2006 - 2:03 am
By Andrew Perna
Believe it or not the NBA is heading into its second quarter. A few dozen
games have been played by all thirty teams, and we've gotten a pretty good
look at the league's best, and worst, players in the 2006-2007 season.
What better time than now to identify some of the league's most surprising
performers in the young season?
We knew they'd be great, but could they win MVP?
Dwight Howard, PF Orlando
We knew Dwight Howard was good, but I'm not sure many people felt he'd become
the constant force he has been this season. Leading the league in rebounds
doesn't hurt either. He's averaging career-highs across the board and has led
the Magic to a 16-10 record. That's good enough for second in the Eastern
Conference.
Carmelo Anthony, SF Denver
George Karl has really gotten through to his star player in recent years.
Carmelo is averaging a career-high 31.6 points per game, which is good enough
for the league scoring lead. Anthony has also stepped up his defense,
averaging a career-high 1.5 steals a contest. Denver is overachieving at 13-9.
Steve Nash, PG Phoenix
Sure he's the two-time reigning league MVP, but he's stepped his game up to
another level this season. He's posting career-highs in points and assists
per game and has led the Suns to fourteen straight victories heading into
Phoenix's game against Toronto on Tuesday.
When good players become great…
Joe Johnson, G Atlanta
The Celtics have been banging their heads against the wall ever since
Johnson broke out in Phoenix a few years ago. With Al Harrington back in
Indiana, Johnson has assumed nearly all of the offensive responsibilities
for the Hawks. Joe is averaging 28.4 points a game for the 9-14 Hawks,
which is good enough for sixth on the NBA's scoring list.
Deron Williams, PG
Utah
I knew the Jazz point guard would be a solid player throughout his career,
but I honestly didn't expect the young kid to be this good this quickly. He
played second fiddle to Rookie of the Year Chris Paul last season, but he's
broken out with 17.2 points and 9.0 assists a night.
Carlos Boozer, PF
Utah
You know you're team is hot (Utah is 18-6) when you have two players on this
list. Boozer, who was more well-known for 'punking' Cleveland on his way to
Utah a few off seasons ago, is having a career-year. His 22.1 points and 12.2
rebounds are all-star caliber numbers. If he keeps this up, along with
Williams, Utah could have a new Stockton-to-Malone combination.
Zach Randolph, PF Portland
In his sixth season Randolph, a former Indiana Prep star, in finally showing
what he's truly capable of. He's a lock for a double-double every night with
the Blazers and he's improved his suspect foul shooting. If he can maintain
this pace he'll make the Western Conference all-star team in February, a big
accomplishment for this notorious lazy big man.
Who are these guys?
Andris Biedrins, FC Golden State
This season opponents have had a tougher time guarding and boxing out Biedrins
then they've had pronouncing his Latvian name. Andris is putting up a near
double-double for the Warriors on a nightly basis, despite averaging fewer
than four points and five boards in his first two NBA seasons. He's the early
pick for the league's Most Improved Player.
Kevin Martin, SG Sacramento
Forget Ron Artest, Mike Bibby, or Brad Miller. The Kings' leading scorer
this season is third-year guard Kevin Martin. The Western Carolina alum is
averaging nearly 22 points a night and is shooting a scorching 50.7 percent
from the field. He's not a defensive liability either with his 1.4 steals
per contest.
Monta Ellis, G Golden State
A second round pick from the 2005 draft, Ellis has exploded on the scene this
season. He played sparingly in his rookie season, but put up respectable
numbers of 6.8 points and 1.6 assists per game in less than twenty minutes of
playing time. This fall he's averaging 18.6 points and 4.3 dimes a game. He's
young and humble; he may be a better option than B.Diddy or the very available
Allen Iverson for Golden State.
